The Volume Shadow Copy utility from Windows creates backups of your Windows while in use. If Volume Shadow Copy is disabled, your computer’s System Restore points might not be available.

So, is the service running? If not start it.

I'll double check that when I'm at my desktop. Currently watching the football games. That said, if it was off I don't think I could create or see my checkpoints. The problem is they're there, then they're gone after a short period.

Again, I'll check on these next time I'm at my desktop. Currently on my laptop.

If you post the log collector results they can be scanned for problems:

Some of the problems typically seen were in post #9.

@zbook, I've not dismissed your suggestion. It's just I've not been at my desktop today, but instead watching the game and keeping abreast of posts here. Once my sports day is over, I'll have a go at my desktop and look at your suggestion.

@Compumind, how exactly do I check to see if VSS is enabled/disabled? Again, will check later.

    No problem.

    Follow these steps:

    1) Type services.msc in the Run dialog box or in the Search bar.
    2) Open the Services window.
    3) Find the Volume Shadow Copy item from the list of services.
    4) Make sure Volume Shadow Copy is running: check the “Status” column corresponding to this item. If it’s not running, click Start the service from the left in order to start it.

Delete existing and create new Restore Points. Let me know.

    Thanks

So I did check VSS and it's set to manual, which is where my other machines are also set to (and not having the issue) so I left it alone....

My test restore point is still holding so I'll wait a little longer. I have a theory, but I'll have to test it out a few more time. Basically a sleep mode issue.

Yep. This is the correct default setting.

Thanks to the OP for reporting this; I'm seeing exactly the same issue on my desktop (1909-64bit). My 250GB system drive has 188GB free and 10% of the drive (25GB) is reserved for restore points. I can create one, I can see it was created, and sometimes in a matter of hours, it's gone.

Question - do you directly put your PC to sleep or do you let it go naturally (after a set amount of time)?

99% of the time it sleeps on its own after a set amount of time; once in a great while I'll press the Sleep button on the keyboard if I know I won't be near the computer.

I checked about an hour ago and there was a Scheduled Restore Point on my C: drive. Just checked again and it's gone, and my PC did not sleep in the interim. Totally bizarre.
