What do you mean by Custom Recovery Partition? I use Reflect which is very reliable.

There are advantages in using both. Reflect lets you schedule automated full / differential / incremental backups and you can mount an image to recover any file / folder.

Can someone advise the size of the recovery partition when it includes Windows, all programs and user data e.g. my laptop currently has 50GB of stuff and is a small installation.

Advantages of MR includes the ability to make USB or DVD boots, and/or having MR as a boot-choice, in Windows' "early menu".

Depends on the size of the contents. OEM recov partitions are often only slightly (1-2GB) larger than the contents.

When making a backup image with Macrium it's best practice to save the image to another disk drive or the cloud.

A custom recovery is typically on the affected drive.

So Macrium is better when there is drive failure.

Having a backup image in the cloud is an added protection from fire, etc.
