    Macrium restore failed: Error 100

Hi guys, since a few month I run Macrium Reflect Home v7.2.x (paid version) and run daily back ups, but until yesterday I never had to restore an image.
However, yesterday an update for my vpn client messed things up (solved now), so I had to restore an image.
It did not succeed though: it resulted in "Error 100".
(I bought a license from someone else, so I can't get support from Macrium directly.)

So now I'm stuck. And having to 'upgrade' to 1903 or 1909 in the near future, being able to restore a good image is a must, isn't it?

    Macrium restore failed: Error 100-1macr.png
My rig: Windows 10 Pro 1809 x64 desktop with 3 internal drives:
    1. GPT1 with Windows 10 partition (C:) and a data only partition (D:)
    2. GPT2 for back ups (B:)
    3. MBR with Windows 7 Pro

    Macrium restore failed: Error 100-2macr.jpg
What I don't understand, is why Macrium 'sees' the image file on GPT2(B:) but shows both 'Source: GPT1' and 'Destination: GPT1' (instead of 'Source: GPT2')??
(Or is that because Macrium defines 'source' as where the image originates from?)

    Macrium restore failed: Error 100-3macr.jpg
Again: image file on GPT2(B:) but both Source and Destination: GPT1.

    Macrium restore failed: Error 100-4wpe.jpg
    Step 'Run from Windows PE'.

    Macrium restore failed: Error 100-5error100.jpg
Resulting in 'Error 100' and notification "Searching for marker file...", "Not found".

    What am I doing wrong?

    Thanks, TJ

Hi, noting that you later moved to using MR's boot disk for restoring Windows - I presume that's what you're restoring- as you would have to of course- you could try browsing for an image file as per page 145 here:
    http://updates.macrium.com/reflect/v...df?src=sidebar

given the failure to find an image file.

Note: it's not the most robust practice to use an internal drive for your backups.
    Consider:
    - PSU failure or similar severe enough to damage all disks
    - fire/theft/flood
    - viruses
    - ransomware
    etc

Being able to remove the backup medium and put it in a safe place is better. Further, the disk is unpowered for much of its life.

Yes, but didn't you see in my 'What I don't understand' pic that Macrium doesn't give me that option?
And: as I wrote before, it DOES show the correct image 'B:\.... .mrimg'. THAT's what's bugging me.

You're right, but external hdd's have their shortcomings too, don't they?

Thank you for your reply. I spent (enough of my) time looking at your various screenshots but now must move on to other things. Recall, help is in volunteers free time. I'm sure someone will help you though.

I suggest if you've bought a license by whatever means, you contact Macrium and see if they will grant you access to the forum. Or try submitting a support request anyway if that's feasible.

I found no reference to Error 100 when searching.

Thanks dalchina, I understand you have to 'move on'.
Contacted Macrium already: it's a no no.

If you can mount the image, you could create an image of the mounted drive using something else.

diskgenius, aomei backupper, O&O diskimage, etc, etc, etc

Like dalchina, I can find no reference to error 100.

But looking at your screenshots, it is not the restore as such that's failing. It is the automatic restore that's failing to find the marker file or the image to restore. As you say, it seems to think the source and destination are the same.

I'd try booting from a Macrium rescue usb to attempt the restore, thereby side-stepping the errors seen when attempting to start the restore from within Windows.

Thanks, SIW2. But I would do that as a last resource.
The stupid thing is that I purchased MR, but obviously don't really understand it. Want to 'get' MR and my mistake(s) first, preferably.

Yes, I'm glad that's out of the way. (sort of)

Right. Will give that a try later.

    Thanks so far, guys.

Will mark this topic as 'Solved' thanks to Bree's confirmation of my suspicion about messed up references.
Still have to find out how to solve that, though.

    Thx everyone
