    A couple Macrium Reflect questions

Stuff like this should be obvious but I'm at a loss.

I made a full system backup, and plan on doing daily incremental backups to a dedicated external drive. To open Macrium, I had to Ok UAC. Once the backup was made, I exited the program.

Will Macrium do the incremental backups in the background? What about the UAC? Do I minimize the program?

Incremental backups are a Premium feature, in you are running Macrium Reflect Free or the 30-day trial then you will have to buy Macrium to continue with Incrementals after the 30 days. Differentials are available in the Free edition.

No, Macrium won't run backups in the background unless you tell it to. To do that, set up and save your backup definition file, then click the 'Schedule' icon (a clock). You can close Macrium once you have set up a schedule. It will run the backup automatically at the scheduled time without any further input from you.

Whilst you can configure MR to perform scheduled imaging, assuming that you are using your own storage device rather than some sort of cloud storage e.g. consider that:
    a. the lifetime of your storage device is probably being reduced if it is left powered on
    b. your storage device is vulnerable to any virus that might affect your PC
    c. any power failure could simultaneously affect both your PC and your backup device.
    d. Should some adverse event e.g. fire/theft/flood occur both your PC and backup device would be affected.

I.e. consider how you can most securely perform backups and retain their integrity.

Looks like I may have to rethink this (instead of overthinking it). I had the free home version but thought I may need it, and ended up buying the paid Home version at half price.

For me, I guess there's no real advantage in scheduling backups (a, b, c, d above).

I'll just do a full system backup from time to time

Great - someone should tell Macrium that even searching for Macrium help v7 isn't enough - they really should not keep all the minor versions on line.

I wouldn't rely on remembering to do full backups since you will probably forget. FWIW I schedule a monthly full backup and weekly differential backup to an external drive - frequent users may want daily backups. I also do manual backups to another drive stored separately from the PC. I also do a full backup before a feature update. You can used Image Guardian for extra security if you have the full version.

Between your weekly and monthly backups, is the external HDD running the entire time your machine is on?

Do whatever suits you. For desktops, caddies with a power switch can be useful for hotswapping.
