And now for the good news! From now on, I'm pretty sure that every time you go to set up new Rescue Media (on each new update of MR), you should have WinRE as the default.

First, there is no perfection. There is no such thing as Zero fail. And I get this product for free. Under those circumstances, I can hardly complain. If I don't like it, I can go elsewhere.

Second, I never said 2 fails. I said bumps in the road. One of these alleged bumps was this one about Wim RE, which was easily and thoroughly explained by Winona. The other was an issue with a Macrium update that was soon dealt with. One of the many great things about Macrium is it's reliability, but if there is a "bump in the road", just revert back to a previous version that was working for you. Problem solved.

I have to agree with you 100%! I have a large amount of stuff for teaching Windows 10, so I bit the bullet and paid for MR a couple or three weeks ago when they had a half-price sale. I tell my students that no more than they have to back up, Free is all they need.

Since then I've tried the leading competitors in this category, and I settled on Macrium, hands down, and never looked back. If you take the time to learn how to use it (it's not complicated), it couldn't be simpler, faster or more competent, IMHO.

I came to the same conclusion you did a few years ago too.

Just curious Ken. Why would you use WinPE when Microsoft seems to have obsoleted it and replaced it with WinRE?

Not sure if this is correct, but I seem to recall reading here that WinPE is huge and provides more of an advantage using with multiple different computers, while WinRE is suited specifically to the computer it's created on, and always includes wifi drivers. (Maybe I'm totally wrong about that...) But, some people might want to make WinPE in case they want to use it on multiple computers?

I haven't read the whole thing, but from what I can tell, each one has its pros and cons. The main one being that WinPE loads network drivers and offers a more complete Vista-like command-line environment, while WinRE offers more and better boot- and disk-management and recovery tools.

Soooooo, looks to me like we should create one of each if we want to be fully "covered".

Which makes me wonder why Microsoft didn't add WinPE features to WinRE while they were at it. Sigh . . .

Interesting read here 7.2 choices: WinPE or WinRE? .

Tried out Win PE and it then defaulted in advanced settings. The only way I could get it back to default to RE was to uninstall all components and reinstall. Couldn't find any other way.

PE is out dated for recovery system use and needs to be redownloaded each time.
Also PE is actually a stripped down operating system, with which you can:

• Set up your hard drive before installing Windows.
• Install Windows by using apps or scripts from a network or a local drive.
• Capture and apply Windows images.
• Modify the Windows operating system while it's not running.
• Set up automatic recovery tools.
• Recover data from unbootable devices.
• Add your own custom shell or GUI to automate these kinds of tasks.

Thanks for being the guinea pig, Fabler! I was going to try that too, but now I think I'll leave things at WinRE.
