Cable or adapter for external, USB adapter should have two ends to computer side, one is for power only. USB power ob laptops is typically lower than on desktops. USB 3 should be able to supply more power but again, it tends to be lower than on desktops.

Thanks for indicating you’ll keep us posted. Just to clarify, you can backup to and read from this drive when using USB2? Using Macrium?
Yes, that's correct, I have no problem with USB2.0 port for backing up or reading the drive.

My external HDD enclosure has two cables, I am going try with that when it arrives this evening.
    Update:
    Hi Guys,
The disk showed up only once when I connected for the first time in my G9-793, my other laptop has only one USB 3.0 port,
when I tried again it failed to show up in file explorer and Macrium.

When I tried switching the cable around, it started showing in explorer and Macrium, I am going to disconnect and check in the other pair of ports.

    UPDATE:
Thank you guys, I think I need to buy a new cable or an enclosure, my USB to SATA cable is the culprit.

Your help is much appreciated resolving the issue, the SATA to USB cable served me well over 10 years so it's about time for a new one, thanks again.

So brummy should be able to hear drive spin up.

It should be noted he said this happens on two different computers and only fails on USB3. Agree it could be power but two different devices. Still possible.

So brummy do you hear drive spin up?
Thank you Caledon Ken for your excellent help, you went out of the way to help me by contacting Macrium, much appreciated.

    Glad you got it identified.

    One big problem solving community.

I'll let Macrium know it was sorted.

Macrium works well on all four laptops but there is a slight hiccup on one. On the boot page of one laptop the timer text disappears and so does the mouse pointer so it goes like this -

I've removed and reinstated the Macrium boot option but makes no difference. Not a big deal so will wait for another Macrium update to see if it will fix it. It will be something in my setup no doubt.
