    Back Up

I use W10 file back up, onto an external drive. It is set to save files for 1 month, but it saves them forever. Is there a way to get it to delete anything that was saved more than a month ago?

    Thank You

What are you using to do the backup? File History? If so, you can clean up older versions in the Control Panel, available through advanced settings. Option One here...

Thanks for that. I have deleted them manually as per your link. i was hoping that i could set it up to do it automatically.

That is what you'd expect it to do if you set 'retain for 1 month', but it appears there is no automatic scheduled task to do the clean up. The one task for File History in Task Scheduler is the one to make the backups.

I suspect the only purpose of being able to set a retention time is to set a default for the manual clean up.

However, there's nothing to stop you setting up your own task to do the clean up. Choose an appropriate command line (one with the -quiet option) from Option One Step 2 in this tutorial and set up a Scheduled Task to run it automatically.

Currently the answer seems to be that despite one being able to configure which backups to keep in the GUI, there is no automatic cleanup of File History in Windows by default. Instead it seems that users are expected to do it manually using the provided GUI or create e.g. a task in the Task Scheduler to do it automatically in the background. The latter is pretty easy...
