Switch from old 320gb hdd to 500gb ssd (help w/ disk management)
What needs to be done to use the full capacity? I read somewhere to "extend volume" but that option is grayed out for me.

Disk Management can't do it because of that intervening 478 mb recovery partition.
Use another tool. The standard recommendation is Minitool Partition Wizard, a free download. It does not have that limitation.
It's been a couple of years since I used it, but..................it has a pretty intuitive interface.
Install it, open it.
I'd imagine you select that unallocated portion at the end and then look for a menu that asks you what you want to do with it.
You'd choose something like "add to the C partition".
Nothing will actually happen until you poke a choice on the upper left that says something like "carry out my instructions". I can't recall the exact terminology, but it's deliberately there to keep you from accidentally doing the wrong thing.
It should complete within a minute or two if not seconds.
Does this look right? Want to make certain before proceeding.
Yeah, that looks like it should do it.
You have apparently selected C and then told the program to add the unallocated to C--rather than selecting the unallocated and telling the program to add the unallocated to C. Either way should work.
I think your next step would be to use the "apply" button at the upper left. That's what I had referred to. Nothing will actually be done until you poke that.
Aye aye. Good work. I've had a Crucial MX100 for about 4 years, probably an earlier model than you have. Working well and it still has 89% useful life remaining if SMART stats are to be believed.
