    Question about Macrium Reflect (free)

Hi. I know with Macrium free version you can make 4 differential backups. What's not clear to me is it 4 differential backups per full backup or 4 differential backups total. Thanks in advance for any replies.

Those are actually in the retention rules and you are free to change them as you like, increasing the number, or even turning off retention rules completely. Retention rules are particularly useful if you set up scheduled imaging (so that the backup drive doesn't get full). For more on this see this thread.

Have I got my Macrium differentials right?

Thanks for your reply and link. I don't do scheduled imaging. After the initial full backup I typically create a differential backup only after Windows updates or Driver updates or Program updates.

I don't do scheduling either. In fact, I don't use retention rules at all. On each of my machines I have set up a Backup Definition file so that I can make a Full or Differential backup whenever I want. In those definition files I have turned off all retention rules. I prefer to manually clean up older images in my backup drive is getting full.

I find scheduling backups very useful - saves me having to remember to do it. I also do manual backups before fiddling with the PC and check that the scheduled backups have been made.

I appreciate your input. I have no problem remembering to make a backup after any change to my system so I find scheduled backups not to be necessary in my case.

In my case I have multiple machines. I don't schedule backups because I can't connect the external backup HDD to all of them at once

My routine every Patch Tuesday is to update each machine then make a new Full backup to the a partition on its internal drive, then to backup the whole machine to the external HDD, Repeat and rinse for each machine I use. Any further updates later in the month would warrant a Differential backup.

Retention rules are useful (perhaps even necessary) for scheduled backups where you're not keeping an eye on the total size of the backup images. For manual backups like ours I prefer to turn off all the retention rules so they don't get in the way.

I also use scheduled backups to backup my user files in addition to the system files.
