Unable to create backup in Macrium Reflect Free

I have been stuck for a long time trying to make a backup of a newly created Disk Image. Whatever changes I make to the address of the destination folder I get a popup saying the 'destination folder path is contained within the Image'. I don't know what this means or what to do about it. This is just the most recent of many traps preventing the creation of a backup, the voluminous Help files make me more confused..

Where are you trying to save the image? To a partition on an internal drive? That message means that you have told Macrium to save the image to one of the partitions you are trying to include in the backup.

If you are saving to an external HDD (as is best practice) make sure the partition(s) on external drive are not ticked in the list of partitions to be backed up to the image.

I am not trying to back up to an internal drive, which would seem rather pointless. I was trying to back up to (1) a USB flash drive and (2) a much larger external USB HD. I used both for the original backup image. So it seems your explanation does not apply? I suspect now that the flash drive is probably unsuitable (temporarily) because with the original Image saved to it there is not enough free space. At first I tried using the original name, etc. hoping the new backup would simply replace the old one (as many program update downloads often do) but when I tried with a new name as well it still did not work. The external HD has plenty of free space, yet with the old name and with a new name I still does not work and I get the odd message as above.

I also had reason to think it was backing up to OneDrive, but could not find it. If it had, that too should have been OK as I would make it available online only, right away.

So that makes three possible external locations, none of which accept my attempts to backup the image. Also again, should the image be on my OS C drive too? If it is, I have not found it yet.

If you open Macrium while an external drive is connected, then click 'Image selected disks on this computer' you will find that all drives including the external HDD are selected by default. If you then try to back up these drives to that same external drive it will complain that you can't put an image on a drive you are making an image of.

Make sure the external drive is NOT selected. One of the easiest ways to do this is click 'Create an image of the partition(s) required to backup and restore Windows' rather than click 'Image selected disks on this computer'. You can then tick any further partitions you want to include in the image but not, of course, the drive you are going to put the image on.

I do not remember seeing the drives being displayed, but I can see the logic of this. I will have a look tomorrow.

Macrium may be automatically adding a tick to backup the external drive along with the Windows drive.
You should see all your drives listed under the Backup tab within Macrium, see if the external drive is ticked for backup, if so untick the partition/s listed. If unsure please provide a screenshot.

I continued to struggle with Macrium Reflect and eventually abandoned it. using Aomei Backupper instead ---- it has proved simple and clear, easy to use (including continuous progress reports so I could see what was happening). Thanks for the help but I think I have found what I want for my fairly basic purposes.
