    System Restore Failed - (0x80070005)

I have accidentally removed some files and programs.

Although I have done a Macrium back-up a month ago to an external drive, and this should teach me to do it more often.

I have tried to do a System Restore to a point 5 days ago. Although I have disabled "windows defender" in the registry and ensured that "Shadow Volume" in services is set to automatic.

I have tried 2 system restores and each time (0x80070005) comes up with a failed restore and despite being a Admin.

    Help

If you want to save your personal files you can use ShadowExplorer to browse the restore points.

Try running system restore from within safe mode.
Defender now has a self protection mode which is probably interfering with restore.

    OK,

Did System Restore in Safe mode. Still had the same error, so uninstalled 'Malwarebytes'.

Tried again, now a new error 0x80070003. Saying it could not replace 'WindowsApp.tmp\SharedLimitedTime' with the original. ?

Can this .tmp file/folder be removed and by deleting or which correct method.

Restoring Windows using System Restore will not recover or restore deleted personal files.

    Thanks,

The reason trying to use Restore to recover files/programs.

When I click on 'Start'. Some of the deleted programs icons are missing from 'Pin to Start' and from the column to the left.

Then if I go to 'Control Panel/Programs and Features', the missing/deleted programs are still listed as being installed.

    thanks again

You can use Revo Uninstaller to uninstall programs.

You can use ShadowExplorer to browse the restore points for deleted files and recover them.

    --- If it can't, it can't.

"Can this .tmp file/folder be removed and by deleting or which correct method."
--- I don't know what you would gain by this and I wish I could answer that question.

You have a Macrium backup from a month ago. Why not use it and pick up from there?

Also I have done some Restore points on some computers and never had to disable windows defender or uninstall Malwarebytes.
--- How is it determined that is necessary?

Are the missing files in your last Reflect backup? If so, you can mount the partition in that backup as a virtual drive and copy / paste the files folders you need.

I don't use System Restore since I find it more reliable to recover from Reflect backups. I suggest you schedule automatic Reflect backups at a frequency dependent on you computer use.
