Extend partition creating dynamic disk - problem for image backup? Solved

Extend partition creating dynamic disk - problem for image backup?

I have an SSD for my system and a regular (1TB) disk for data. I have a partition on the regular disk for an image backup but when I tried to create a new image backup for 1903, it says I need more room. I shrank the D partition and tried to extend the image backup partition. I am getting the following message:

    Is that a problem?

Um, forgive the obvious question- why are you aiming to keep the image backups on internal disks at all? Far more robust to keep them on external storage, preferably offline and remote from your PC.

Which tool are you using to manipulate your partitions?

Good point. I could put it on a passport drive. I am just using standard Windows disk management functions.

An "image backup" typically does not require being on a separate partition.

Do you have some unusual circumstance?

What application are you using to make images?

As for your partition management problem, I think the text towards the end of this (not very good video) may explain why you see this and why you don't want to proceed.

As I can't see exactly what you have on disk or what you're doing, I can only guess.

I tried to put the image on my Passport drive but did not initially provide enough space. See below

I shrank the main partition and tried to extend the image partition. I still get the message shown above. Is it a problem to use a dynamic disk for the image backup? I don't know if it will make a difference whether I use the Windows tool or Macrium, I just need to add more space.

I deleted the partition and created a new one with larger space and that solved the problem

My post above says why a dynamic disk would not be valid.

    Glad you've solved it.

A 1Tb disk should be enough (if empty) to allow you to at least start imaging a 1Tb disk (disk 1). Why? Image files as normally used represent the used part of the disk, and also are compressed. Thus the image file should be considerably smaller than your installed disk. (Note the size of your image partitions).

Macrium reflect is often recommended here. Perhaps you attempted to use something else.

Now consider. How much use will your image file be if your PC is affected by
    a. a virus
    b. ransomware

or suffers a catastrophic failure such that the disks are damaged (PSU failure) or your PC is lost or stolen?

Noted- you have a manufacturer's recovery partition. If this is obsolete you could consider deleting it or perhaps moving it to offline storage if you wanted to restore your PC to 'as bought' at some time.
