Unable to Boot to BIOS Menu on Toshiba Laptop

    Hello there

I have an issue with not being able to boot my Toshiba Laptop to a repair DVD or a USB recovery drive. I have recently created both from the laptop and am trying to test them.

I am unable to get the laptop to boot into the BIOS menu.

    I have tried the following:

    • All the functions keys (F1 to F12), plus the “Esc” and “Del” keys.
    • Clicking off “Turn off fast start-up (recommended)” in Power Options.
    • Rebooting from “EFI Usb Device” and “EFI DVD\CDRom” (Settings\Update & Security\Recovery\Advanced start-up\Restart now\Use a Device)

None of these have any effect – the laptop always just boots into Windows 10 as normal.

It is a Toshiba Satellite L50-C-20M.

    Any help greatly appreciated.

    Welcome to TenForums Geoff.
I have a Toshiba laptop (system one in my specs below). The bios skips the 'F2 for bios, F12 for boot menu' screen if you are resuming from hibernation. Windows 10's Fast Startup is a form of hibernation, so you either have to turn it off, or use Restart from the power button when you want to see the bios options. A Restart performs a full startup from cold and should (briefly) offer the F2/F12 options on the Toshiba logo screen.

I did (once) get myself in a situation where it didn't.

I had set the bios boot speed for 'fast'. Not being able to get into the bios, the only way to turn that off was with the Toshiba HWSetup tool.

If you do not have the HWSetup tool, go to the Toshiba support site and enter your serial number. You can download the one for your machine from there. The W7 one should still work in W10 (mine does).

Thanks for your reply. It was helpful in my finally honing in on the issue, in that I had forgotten I had mapped the Fn key to the Ctl key ages ago using Sharpkeys, so I wasn’t properly pressing the F2 key when booting.

    For the record…

The Toshiba “support” site proved entirely impenetrable, but I did manage to find HWSetup somewhere and download it, and it does seem to work. The original issue I had that caused me to map the Fn key in the first place seems to have gone away.

I get tormented with new crap every time I do an update. Now I don’t seem to be able to shut down properly – if I press “Shut down” (i.e. from Windows, rather than using the power button), it generally starts to shut down and then just returns to the login menu. It also generally comes up with a non-sensical prompt about other users still using the PC. Using the power button is erratic – sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t. Have you also experienced this by any chance?

Perhaps its just that I'm used to it, I've had mine since 2014 so I've had plenty of time to acclimatise

Your profile doesn't say where your location is, but your Satellite L50-C-20M is specifically a UK model, part number PSKWNE-06V016EN. For driver and manuals go to the UK support site: Support – Consumer PCs - dynabook and either enter your serial number or choose you model from the product list.

Only the 'other users' issue. That can appear on any machine and seems to be related to having the 'Use my sign in info...' option turned on. It is safe to ignore it and shut down anyway.

Use sign-in info to auto finish after Update or Restart in Windows 10

For not shutting down properly, try turning off 'Fast Startup'.

Thanks - taking off the "Use my sign-in info to automatically finish setting up my device" setting seems to have solved the shut down issue.
