Is a recovery partition needed if you have a rescue disk

What is the function of a recovery partition?
Under what circumstance is it needed/used?

If you have a made a rescue disk to boot your computer is it needed?

    Thanks for your help

Depending on how the rescue disk was created the recovery disk will do the same as the recovery partition
Except you will not have the automatic fall over into OS Recovery if system falls to start after 3 attempts

I don't keep Windows recovery partitions. I have custom rescue partitions I can boot into stored on my second physical data drives. I also have rescue USB flash drives as well as multiple computers I can create rescue flash drives with. IMHO, the built-in Windows recovery partition is useless.

NOW.....if this is a retail off-the-shelf computer, keep in mind the recovery partition likely contains the files needed to restore the factory software. If you want to keep that, then don't delete the recovery partition.

The Recovery Partititon is used to create a WinRE boot ISO or medium with imaging programs like Macrium Reflect. If it´s not present, it´s necessary to create a WinPE ISO or medium, which involves a somewhat big download.

The only downside of the Recovery is that in some Windows upgrades a new one may be created, using space taken from the OS partition. This may be confusing to some people.

If the computer is having any unexpected shutdowns/restarts, BSOD, etc. then it is often useful to have safe mode available for troubleshooting.

To see the impact of a no recovery partition you can disable and re-enable it.

Open administrative command prompt and type or copy and paste:
    reagentc /info
    Reagentc /disable
    Reagentc /enaable

Check to see what happens with the windows advanced troubleshooting menu:
    a) startup settings
    b) startup repair
    c) system restore
    d) command prompt
    e) etc.
