Power loss while doing a macrium restore. Bricked?

I guess I've bricked my Windows 10 Home tablet. Is there any way out?

I had an offer from WU to upgrade to 19H1/1903, so I first made a macrium restore point on an external usb drive. I was doing a test restore on that when the tablet's battery ran out (at 82% way through) and everything died.

I'm sure that sounds dumb, but I don't have an alternative but to do the restore on battery power. There is only one port on the machine. It is a mini USB and is used for both charging AND data connectivity, so I can't concurrently plug-in the power AND an external USB drive/mouse (I need a external mouse to run macrium PE as the touch-screen doesn't work with PE). Previously, the machine has had enough battery life to get through a restore, but not this time!

I have macrium restore discs on (1) a USB key and (2) a microSD cards, but they seem to be of limited use.

    1) Right now, when I boot the machine without any drives, I get a blue 'Windowsy-looking' screen saying:
    -------------------------------
    Recovery
Your PC needs to be repaired
    Error 0xc0000225
You'll need to use recovery tools. If you don't have any installation media (like an disc or a USB device) contact your administrator or manufacturer.

Press the Windows key to use a different device or operating system
    ----------------------
Pressing the Windows button does nothing. The manufacturer doesn't exist.

    2) Powering up the machine with the macrium USB-recovery drive plugged in, it asks for a keyboard layout then gives me the windows Troubleshoot menu

    >Recover from a drive (I haven't tried this yet)

    Advanced Options
    System Restore
    Uninstall Updates
    System Image Recovery
    Startup Repair
    Command Prompt
    More..
    Choose an option:
    > Continue
    > Use a device
    > Use Another Operating System
    > Troubleshoot
    > Turn Off

Those menu options work and lead to the expected submenus, but (almost) none of the sub menus actually invoke any useful processes. (for example: > Use Another Operating System > Macrium Reflect System Recovery', doesn't actually launch Macrium; "Use a device" leads to 5 suboptions, but none of them lead to anything useful happening ).

I can get to a command prompt and see drives X: C: F: (my recovery disk, which contains a file F:\EFI\Boot\bootie32.efi, which, I assume, is what has gotten me this far!); and E: (a microSD card slotted into the machine). I have a few microSD cards with macrium/windows .iso images on but the .isos won't run from the command line ("couldn't mount file").

c: has lots of my program files on it. I can run macrium.exe from the command line and it pulls up the Macrium PE User interface. When I use that to try and restore to one of my Restore points (copied to E:, the microSD card), it crashes pretty early on.

I can get to the bios, but can't see anything useful to do when I get there. Boot order is :
    1 UEFI: SanDisk
    2 UEFI: Built-in EFI...

    .

So that's it. What's the best way forward? Is it worthwhile to do a fresh reinstall of macrium from the command line? Or is that unwise? I don't want to break it any more than it is...

or is it just a matter of making a new .iso of the OS and hoping that Windows's "Recover from a drive" option (a) fixes it (b) doesn't make it worse. (Keep in mind that I can only run on battery power (for about 4 hours) if using a USB drive ).

I also have a USB drive with 'Unix Live Disk' written on it. I don't know Linux - would that help?

    thanks

Once you have started the restore you no longer need the mouse. Can't you just unplug the mouse at that point and plug in the power instead? Once the restore is complete you would normally click the 'OK' button on a 'restore complete...' message before rebooting, but as the restore has completed you could equally well just turn it off and back on again.

Can you boot the tablet using a bootable windows 10 iso and open Windows RE?

Run startup repair > look for srttrail.txt file > save to flash drive > upload into the thread with a working computer.

Files can often be backed up using a bootable Ubuntu / Linux flash drive.

Open windows RE > command prompt >

Use a camera or smartphone camera to take pictures and post images into the thread.
For any problems posting images use share links (one drive, drop box, or google drive)

    bcdedit /enum
    bcdedit | find "osdevice"
(note the partition drive letter for other commands if needed)

I would need to remain connected to the macrium restore point data/drive while the restoration is proceding, no?. Presumably the restore point file can't be on the same drive that is being restored(?) There is only one partition on the (32GB) C: drive. A macrium restore point of it is about 14GB, which I have been storing-on/running-from an external USB spinny drive. I guess I could put the restore point on a microSD card and slot that into the machine, but I didn't have a (NTSC) SD card until an hour ago. I guess that I will be doing that in the future, if I can fix the machine. While I am in this problem state, I am booted from a USB recovery drive - presumably that needs to stay plugged into the port to keep the Win RE alive?....

No, it doesn't. Once you have booted from a recovery drive the boot.wim file (.wim = windows image file) has been loaded into memory from the usb. You are running from this image in memory, not from the usb. You can safely remove the usb.

I don't think that I've ever been able to (ref: Backup and Restore with Macrium Reflect ), but I'll give it another go tomorrow. I can boot to a (sorta) Win RE from my macrium recovery disk. Is that good enough?

Run startup repair > look for srttrail.txt file > save to flash drive > upload into the thread with a working computer.
This (booted from the Macrium Restore disk's version of Win RE) returns 'Startup repair couldn't repair your PC - press advanced options or shut down" Log file: (blank). Where would I find the srttrail.txt file?

Files can often be backed up using a bootable Ubuntu / Linux flash drive.
The user files are all backed up elsewhere. I just need the machine working.

Open windows RE > command prompt >

Use a camera or smartphone camera to take pictures and post images.. /rebuildbcd
    Thanks, I'll do this tomorrow.

If files are backed up and you can boot to the windows 10 iso (windows RE) then you typically have these options:

    a) clean install (install drivers, applications, restore saved files)
    b) reset save files equivalent (install drivers, applications)
    c) troubleshoot

Anything could have happened with power loss to boot sector, operating system, registry etc.
Troubleshooting steps are all trial and error.
If it works then you are set and if it fails you try the next repair option.

To find srttrail > view the results for the diskpart command in post#3 > identify the drive letter for the flash drive

    copy c:/windows/system32/logfiles/srt/srttrail.txt W:
(change W: to the drive letter for the flash drive)

It turns out I can. So I guess I could just do a reinstall, but I'd rather fix the old one as:
    (1) device drivers (I have some that I found on the internet, but I have never tested them),
    (2) Windows key (I bought the machine as a refurb from ebay. The manufacturer doesn't exist anymore, but when they did, did not recognise the refurber's serial number;
I have a note of a "Windows Activation Product ID" for it in format nnnnn-nnnnn-nnnnn-aaaaa (where n is a number and a an alpha character) - is that it?)

    Run startup repair > look for srttrail.txt file > (copy c:/windows/system32/logfiles/srt/srttrail.txt W:)
there is no subfolder 'srt' inside folder 'logfiles'
there is no file *srt* found in 'c:/windows/system32/logfiles/' or its subfolders
there is no file *srttrail* found in c: or its subfolders

    bcdedit
It wont run - "the boot configuration data store could not be opened, The requested system device could not be found"

..might be down to access privs (?), per :

Is the Win RE command prompt an admin prompt?

I tried forcing it into Elevated with
    C:\Windows\System32> runas /user:administrator cmd
but it wants an admin password. I tried nullstring and password, then gave up.

@BobSter2 I had the similar troubles with my tablet and using Macrium Reflect.

Did you build the Macrium PE rescue usb stick on the Tablet, or was it built on another system ? The M.R. Rescue usb stick, that I have for my tablet was built on the WIM for the tablet and never asks for a Keyboard and in fact boots into TABLET MODE. If this is the case, then maybe you can find somebody local that has a Tablet similar to yours and create a proper M.R. Rescue usb stick.

Disregard the above - I'm sorry I didn't see your last post.

Looking at the picture from where you boot in the MR PE, it looks like you could just restore the first partition and your system should boot ?

    Hi
    Yes, I'd say so, too.
    OLYMPUS-DIGITAL-CAMERA — imgbb.com
How does one go-about doing that from Win Re/Command prompt ?

It seems like that first partition is the barrier to doing a Macrium restore.

I don't know much about partitions - how can I zinglewongle it, so that it accepts the Macrium restore?
