Cannot do System Image After Win10 Install of 1903

Strange things abound. I have used Macrium free for years and my first problem has emerged and wondered if it is centered around what I keep reading about; CBT.

I try to do a back up and it starts off doing so and then I get an error code 9. Read up on Macrium forums and most say to do a system files repair meaning cmd > chkdisk c: /r. All goes well, but Macrium still gets constipated. I noticed that my other systems also get this error and they are all the same error code.

I did read some posts mentioning Windows 10 CBT. I had no issue even when I had build 1709, but now that I went to 1903 this is my first with having this issue. Not familiar with CBT and not sure if this is truly a Windows thing or a Macrium thing. Does anyone here know how to fix this or maybe they did fix this?

I am on a not too old Macrium 7.1.3317 BTW

I have upgraded four systems to 1903 and got that error on just one of them. As it happens, that particular system was already having other problems (in 1809 as well) in that it regularly needed SFC /Scannow and DISM restorehealth repairs.

Read Macrium's VSS log for the failed backup and look in the Event Log. Do either/both say something like 'Volume Shadow Copy Service warning: VSS was denied access to the root of volume...'? Mine did. If so, granting System full access to root of C:\ fixed it for me...

Open an elevated Command Prompt window... Type icacls (VolumeRootPath) /grant system:f at the command prompt, where (VolumeRootPath) is the path to the volume root directory, for example, icacls C:\ /grant system:f

    ....

...NOTE: for anyone who comes here to debug why Macrium Reflect is failing to clone a drive, this step followed by a restart of Windows appeared to let Macrium Reflect clone successfully.
permissions - Volume Shadow Copy Service warning: VSS was denied access to the root of volume (Win 7 Home Premium) - Super User

Macrium can now make a system image successfully and (touch wood) this also seems to have fixed my corruption issues.

Thanks Bree for all that detail. Got home and started with updating Macrium and that's all it was. I never got to doing any of the settings in the link you provided. All is good again, all systems are backed up.

    Thank again Bree

I got this same error on all three systems. Upgrading MR from 7.1 to 7.2 fixed it.
