just one addition here : If restoring a Virtual Machine to a physical machine (whether the same machine or not) uninstall VMWare tools or VBOX additions before taking your image -- if you want to keep the VM just re-install these after making the macrium image for restore on the target physical machine.

The reason for doing this is that VMWare tools or Vbox additions include some virtual hardware drivers that you don't want on your restored target system -- although you can in theory uninstall these on the restored target system you can avoid potential boot / GSOD problems at startup !!!

I agree with cereberus that the paid version works - never seen it fail yet -- but the free version probably will work for a lot of people - especially when you are restoring to "typical" type computers even from AMD with Nvidia or other graphics to INTEL cpu and graphics machines.
