    Acronis 2019 “Cannot create database”

My brother has an issue with Acronis 2019 which comes up with the message “Cannot create database” and displays the windows shown below.
    -2019-05-25_20-29-37.jpg
Clicking on Continue or Skip or Cancel does not even get the display to close he has to disable Acronis in Task Manager > Processes to close Acronis.
The Acronis forum is full of threads about the same issue and none with a solution and neither is Acronis Support any help!
Any one here has come across this issue and a solution?
Luckily, he does use Macrium Reflect Free which works perfectly but he needs to get to his Acronis backups he created before he used Macrium.

You might try setting an exclusion for this file in any antivirus software to make sure that is not causing the problem.

Also, you might just want to make sure that the latest updates to True Image are installed.

From the screenshot you provided, it looks like you may simply be trying to access the backup via the integration with File Explorer. In other words, simply double-clicking the backup file to open it inside of File Explorer as if it was a drive. You might try also opening the backup through the True Image program itself to see if you can get access that way.

    One more thing...

I've seen imaging programs sometimes not get along well with each other. Try temporarily uninstalling Reflect to see if that helps.

    Good luck!

Herein lies difference between Macrium and Acronis. Macrium are brilliant at fixing issues in days. Their great Customer Support is one of the reasons why Reflect is so well loved on this forum.

I have had Acronis Reps accuse me of trolling and abuse when I tell them they need to shape up. They reiterate company mantra that their product is the best and their research proves it. I show them the many posts here that say differently and they dismiss it saying this forum is biased (which it is for GOOD reasons).

As my dear old Gran used to say "There are none so blind as those who refuse to see".

    Hi folks
I was introduced to Macrium quite a while ago by the good folks on this Forum -- I had used Acronis True Image before that -- it was OK for a while but a few years back they changed the nice simple GUI to something hideous and complex and the activation procedures was more complex than getting a Doctorate in Computer Science. !!!

I swapped to Macrium --the Free version is probably good enough for about 90% of people on these boards but the paid version is fine if you need a slightly more featured backup / recovery program.

The only time it failed recently was with one of the skip ahead Windows builds -- as a previous poster said the support staff worked over a weekend and got it fixed even though they were essentially fixing it for a "Not officially released" build of Windows.

Personally I would advise you to just download the Free version to try it out - you'll be pleasantly surprised.

Actually due to the great Customer Support (something almost totally absent these days from any business) I bought the paid version but I re-iterate for the vast majority the free version should be sufficient for their needs.

    Cheers

cereberus, jimbo, I very much appreciate the information regarding Macrium Reflect. I'm going to try it. I've gotten frustrated with other products, I'll detail some of the fun I've had below. But first, jimbo, a question for you since you have a paid license:

I do a lot of testing and as a result, I reinstall frequently. Does Macrium Reflect have an easy way to deactivate or revoke their license so that it can be reinstalled again after a fresh install of Windows?

Okay, issues with various image based backup programs:

Acronis True Image 2019: If you configure a backup schedule consisting of full and incremental backups, there is NO WAY to tell it WHEN to do the full backups. You only say "do a full backup after every 5 incremental" but NOT "do a full backup on Sundays". Why does it matter? I have a laptop, with a lot of data on it. I let it sit out connected to WiFi which is good enough for my daily incrementals. But, when it does a full backup, I want to move the laptop to another location for the night so that it can be connected to Ethernet. But I need to know what day of the week that will occur. How can this not be controlled??

Acronis Backup 12.5: This is their business software. Again, there are some really stupid design decisions made here. For example, you can convert a backup to a VMware Workstation virtual machine should you need to do so. But you can only do this either at the time that the backup is created (meaning you have to do it with every backup!) OR you can create a separate conversion job. That conversion job can only convert the last backup in the chain! So if I discover I have some form of corruption or other issue and I want to convert a backup from a week ago, I can't do it! Are you nuts?

Veritas System Recovery, Desktop Edition: Would you believe that in an image backup, there is no way to exclude any files or directories from the backup. It automatically excludes certain files like the hibernation file, but you cannot manually specify any exclusions.

Active@ Disk Image: Cannot handle bitlocker. If you try to backup a bitlocker protected drive, it has to backup EVERY SECTOR of the drive, whether there is data there or not. Lot's of fun on a 10TB drive!

Plus, everyone of them has horrible support. I often feel like I'm talking to people who couldn't figure out what port to plug a keyboard into.

The issue my brother had with Acronis 2019 not being able to create database has resolved it self after several shut downs and restarts. Do not know what caused it or what solved it.

As to a preferred backup application I have to agree with cereberus and jimbo. I too used to use Acronis from 2012 to 2015 versions upgrades and had several issues not least not being able to restore the backup on several occasions and Acronis support was non existent and the fact they removed some features, I believe they used to have a feature that backed up emails which was useful but like I said was removed I then swapped to Macrium. I have posted in Macrium forum and contacted Macrium Support on occasions and both have been extremely helpful unlike Acronis support.
I tried to convince my brother to do the same but he resisted quoting that he liked the "Try & Decide" feature as he played around with other applications before deciding to buy it. But the
"Try & Decide" feature never work well. I think I have finally convinced my brother to stick with Macrium Reflect Free which is what he only needs for what he does.
