Completely unable to restore desktop after Windows 10 update

    Hi!
So as a lot of people I was surprised to see that all the files from my desktop were gone after updating my computer. I then checked some forums and as it was mentioned all my files were in C:/Users/*name*/Desktop. I then dragged and dropped all my files to my actual desktop and everything was fine, I could now clearly see them. I then restarted my computer because it was getting very slow and when it was back on , all my files were gone again and C:/Users/*name*/Desktop was empty.
I've been trying everything for the past few hours, but backup was not activated , I can not access any previous versions of my desktop folder, I have checked I was on the right account, used EaseUS Data recovery and restoring my computer to a previous version of Windows did not bring back my files.
Is there a solution? Cause I never expressively deleted my files , they just seem to have vanished and some of them are absolutely crucial for my upcoming exam.
I will be forever grateful to anyone who can help me get back my files or even understand what happened.
    Thanks in advance!

    Hi, welcome to tenforums.

If you haven't yet discovered the value of backups or disk imaging (the routine use of disk imaging -e.g. Macrium Reflect - free- is very often recommended here) then it seems you have nothing to fall back on.

Something like what you describe (loss of files after a feature update/upgrade) did happen to a good number of people several builds back (i.e. a relatively long time ago). You can easily find reference to that.

Are you sure you are not logged in to a temporary user profile? That has happened on occasion.

You don't mention your Windows build (Win key + r, winver)

    Thank you!

My windows OS Build is 17134.706 and the update was Windows 10 if I remember correctly.
I am fairly certain that I am not logged in a temporary user profile as I am the only user of my computer and I have tried to log out and log back in several times. But I am not completely familiar with the use of temporary user profiles so are there any subtle hints so I am actually connected to one?
I have read extensively about people with this similar issue and I think I would have been fine if I did not drag and drop my files from C:/Users/*name*/Desktop to my actual desktop. But I am honestly struggling to understand why that made my file disappear. Any ideas?
Thank you very much for answering btw!

I don't understand: your 'actual desktop' is (or should be) in c:\users\*name*\desktop. So perhaps you dragged them from the correct place to the 'actual desktop' of whoever you were at that moment logged on as (you2), and it wasn't you (if you know what I mean). Since that drag & drop will probably have moved the files (assuming the same drive), they may still be in the desktop folder of 'you2'. So your job is to work out who 'you2' is and log on to that account. This may be tricky, if you do not knowingly have other accounts. Try looking in any of the destop folders under c:\users?
