    Question about Macrium Reflect (free)

Hi. I apologize because the question I'm about to ask was basically answered in a previous post by me but I'd like to be very clear on this. If I make a full backup image with Macrium then let's say a week later I make a differential backup. If at some point I want to restore the backup, do I just restore the differential backup only or do I have to restore the full (base) backup and then restore the differential backup. I have gone through the Macrium pdf booklet but it's not clear about that unless I missed something.
    Thanks much!
    Mark

Yes. You just select the Differential image to restore. This will automatically restore the Full image and then apply the changes recorded in the Differential.

Bree, one more question just popped up. I know that a backup can be restored by double clicking on the My Backup.xml file. If a restore is done that way, do you know if it just restores the base image or will it restore the Differential backup.
    Thanks, Mark

I'm not sure what you mean by that. If I double-click on the .xml in Macrium's 'Backup Definition Files' tab I end up editing it. If I double-click on it in file Explorer I open it in my default browser.

Can you explain, step by step, exactly what you are doing?

When I created my initial base image using Create an image of the partition(s) required to backup and restore Windows a window opens and I follow the steps and then another windows opens that says Run the backup now and in that window it also says you can double click on the My Backup file anytime to run the backup which is created in the Reflect folder that is created in Windows Explorer documents. That's about the best I can describe it. However, if I actually do a restore I would do it from the Macrium interface and not the My Backup file. I'm sorry if I'm not making this very clear. It really isn't important, just something that popped into my head earlier today.

That is basically correct. Another way to restore easily is to right click the Image Backup file itself (where it is stored), and choose Restore. It'll take and guide you thru.

As I said, double-clicking on the .xml file opens it for reading in my default browser. You can click on the .xml file to run the backup that is defined in the .xml file - that is make a new full or differential backup. But you cannot (as far as I can see) start a restore from the .xml file.
