    GPT to MBR scheme using Macrium Reflect Free


    Good evening.

    I have got a MR image that it's currently GPT but I need to restore it to MBR because mainboard died and new one does not support UEFI. How can I accomplish that? I have tried restoring directly but disk is automatically formatted as GPT. Will mounting the image and copying files work? System partition it is 75GB in size and 30GB are used. The remaining free space is for a data partition. I am not interested in restoring the WinRE partition.

    1. Clean install W10 as legacy bios MBR

    2. Recover C drive only from image backup after booting from Macrium Reflect Rescue USB drive overwriting C drive from clean install.

    3. Run fix "Windows boot problems" from Macrium Reflect Rescue drive

    Hello.

    My main idea is to avoid having to reinstall w10 from scratch if possible. That's what the image is for.

    You miss the point. Clean install just sets up the partition structure correctly.

    Then you wipe the clean C drive by overwriting with image backup of C drive with all your apps.

    Final step fixes the boot sectors so it boots ok.

    The clean install is only an intermediary step.

    If you try and recover directly from image to a legacy bios MBR drive, the partitions will be wrong as they will be uefi based not MBR based.

    It´s not necessary to install Windows to set up the partitions. Just convert the disk to MBR, create a partition, and restore the Windows partition to it. Then use fix boot problems.

    I found I needed to install the required partition configuration (as in a clean install) but instead of using restore, drag 'n drop the backup Windows partition to overwrite the new base - this restores the data only irrespective of the the partition structure - not sure if I needed the Fix boot thing ...prolly.

    NB: May have to uncheck "overwrite MBR" in advanced settings

    Drag and drop is a way of making a restore.

    The following link refers to the inverse case, MBR > GPT, but the idea is the same.
