I tried Acronis a long time ago and was completely overwhelmed by it. I currently use Genie Backup Manager 9 and Genie Timeline 10, and I am very happy with both programs. I would like to have a simple image program for piece of mind.

    Simple Acronis is an oxymoron.

Each product has it's own idiosyncrasies.

    It's a personal choice.

    siw2,

    Which other applications?

Some could cope with the vhd format [such as TI] but I haven't noticed any that could cope with vhdx.

If you have a .vhdx, you should be able to mount it in diskmgmt, extract any files, service it or make an image using anything else.

Disk genius opens .vhdx files even in win7, I believe isobuster does, there are probably others.

I thought you meant that other imaging applications could restore vhdx format images. That is something I would be interested in - one format, two possible avenues for recovery - just like I had with Windows 7's vhd images [both Windows 7 imaging & TI could restore them]. But I suppose that this issue is largely academic now because Windows 10 imaging is no longer being fully supported {security updates only}.

You can. Disk Genius will apply the vhdx to a drive (it describes it as clone ) and isobuster will extract it. There may be others.
Another alternative is to use wbadmin command from winpe.
