    System Image Restore Problem

    Hi everyone,

I really need some help. I backed up my system using a system image about a month ago. Then just recently my system kept freezing. I went to reinstall windows and it kept crashing and therefore had no operating system on.

So so I then used my windows 10 recovery cd. I went to the system image restore and located the image.

However every time I try to recover it, the process freezes (image attached). The actual system image is stored on my external hard drive.

    Thanks

Hi, just wondering - do you mean you did succeed in reinstalling Windows, and it kept crashing after the reinstallation?

(And when you reinstalled it, did you delete all Windows partitions and install to the unallocated space created?)

Would be interesting to see what happens if you booted from a live boot disk.. if it still freezes that might suggest the problem is hardware-related rather than not.

Have you made any changes to your RAM? Are your RAM sticks all the same? Are you overclocking?

Please complete your system specs- see mine for comparison. (There's a tutorial if needed- Speccy - free- can help).

Thanks for your reply. I tried to reinstall windows but it freezes around 54% every time. That’s with using a boot cd.

So I then used the boot cd to restore my system image, but again every time I try that, it freezes when the green progress bar gets about an eighth of the way through it.

I haven’t changed any hardware at all inside the machine. It’s only 3 years old and it has a very good spec.

Suggest you try reinstalling Windows, but choose not to download updates. That simplifies the process very significantly.
(You can disconnect your internet assuming there is no special driver requirement).

Be careful to delete all relevant partitions as per the tutorial and the prompts.
Also simply the hardware as much as possible- disconnect any unnecessary peripherals.

Ideally use a live boot disk and check your internal disk(s).

Do you know the build of Windows on your bootable disk?

Despite only being 3 years old, you initial problem (system freezing) and subseqent problems, both an install and a restore freezing part way through, suggests the drive may be failing. Is it an SSD or an HDD?

As you can boot from the CD, then you can get a Command Prompt. From there you can use Chkdsk and, if necessary, Diskpart to manage or create partitions so that you can run Chkdsk.

In future I recommend you use one of the more capable third party imaging / backup programs e.g. Macrium Reflect Free

Did he use Backup & Restore (Windows 7) to make the image?

    That's what post 1 implies.

Restore or not, it seems there's something going on that is affecting system behaviour. Restoring issues appear to be a symptom and restoring not the solution, given the failure to install Windows.

Without the hardware check and determining the build of Windows in use, probably not possible to say more at present.
