System Restore Wont Work - Can't Extract a Certain FIle.. HELP!

I cant do a system restore. When I try to i get an error that says this:

System Restore Wont Work - Can't Extract a Certain FIle.. HELP!-restiore-msg.png

I deleted the recycle bin in safe mode. But after I tried to run system restore again i safe mode I get the same error message.

The message says it failed to extract a certain file. I think this may have to do with a file that Malwarebytes found, quarantined and deleted. But not sure.

So how dd I fix this?

While I cannot help with your error I would start using Macrium or a similar Imaging tool. Far more reliable and you can call back individual files. We have a tutorial on the subject.

Backup and Restore with Macrium Reflect

Are you doing a restore to fix an issue or are you after a specific file. Could that file be fixed with an inplace repair? (Gets all the Windows files fixed although does not fix your programs that may have been altered. ) We also have a tutorial on inplace repair.

    1) What commands did you use to deleted the recycle bin?
    2) Was the recycle bin corrupted?
    3) Are you attempting a restore to replace the recycle bin or for some other reason?

    4) Open administrative command prompt and type or copy and paste:
    5) sfc /scannow
    6) dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
    7) chkdsk /scan
    8) When these have completed > right click on the top bar or title bar of the administrative command prompt box > left click on edit then select all > right click on the top bar again > left click on edit then copy > paste into the thread

    9) Open file explorer > this PC > C: > in the right upper corner search for: C:\windows\logs\systemrestore > post a share link into the thread using one drive, drop box, or google drive

    10) Run the ESET online scanner and post images of the results into the thread.
Also post the report into the thread.

As far as I know if security software deletes files from within restore points then it renders the restore point useless and windows can't use it. You can try an earlier restore point or Macrium Reflect backup image if you made one.

If you just want to recover a file:

    Hi zbook,

Before I answer your questions, I need to tell you that I did a repair install of windows 5 days ago. The reason why is cuz I couldnt do system restore and was getting errors that it couldnt be done.

Now your answers to your questions:
    1) No commands. Just manually uninstalled recycle bin in safe mode.
    2) I dont know if the recycle bin was corrupted.
    3) I'm NOT trying to replace the recycle bin nor is it the reason why I ran into this error. I only wanted to do a system restore to see if it works. Thats all. The reason I deleted the recycle bin is cuz I read a member here had the same issue and brink suggested he delete the recycle bin then try to do a system restore which he was able to do. Unfortunately, the solution didnt work for me.

Although I appreciate your help I strongly feel this wont resolve my issue. Not pessimistic. Just that when possible solutions become long and complicated, solutions become non-existent. What usually happens from these situations that I've read about countless times is a goddamn clean install. But I'm willing to try.

System restore cannot be relied on.
Had you created a backup image?
If not, if you have important files, some options before clean install are:
    a) reset save files (reinstall drivers and applications)
    b) reset save files equivalent (using a windows 10 iso)

Agree with zbook, Images and data backups are the way to go.

Hold up. With all due respect, I went through all the steps you asked me to go tbrough and this is all you have to say?? Wbat about the data I provided you? What do it say about my system?

As I said I did a repair install days ago. I shouldn't be experiencing this situation at all.

No offense again but I ask that you please read my comments in full since I've noticed that you skim through posts while missing important details.

    Thank you.

My interpretation of what Zbook just posted....... His suggestions of the 2 Reset Options are not quite the same as an In-Place Repair. His suggestions would only keep your data/files, not any settings at all. In-Place keeps what it can of your settings, also, if you choose that.

When available please post the results of the ESET scan.

What are the status of the files on the computer?

Is the computer working ok now with the exception of the missing recycle bin?
If not what are the current problems?

What type of repair was done?
An in place upgrade repair may repair problems with the operating system but when performed with the same iso build often makes very limited repairs to the registry.

Are you able to perform a clean install and start with a clean operating system and a new recycle bin?
Or are you able to perform a reset save files and reinstall new drivers and applications?
