Turn Windows Defender off when using Windows 10 Backup Program?

When using Windows 10 built in back up program to make an image, can Windows Defender continue to run or should it be turned off during the process?

I have been making image backups with WD running, but then I have never had to use the backup to restore an image. Just want to be sure the backup will work if needed.

    Thanks

PS: Same question as respects my other system with Windows 7 but using Norton Security. Should the AV be on or off during the backup process?

I haven't had any problems using the Windows 10 built in back up program restoring the image while allowing Windows Defender to run for those who I have helped.
--- If I may, please consider using Macrium Reflect, that is what I use.
--- I don't recall the explanation of what it means, but Windows 10 built in back up program is being deprecated.

On the Windows 7 question, I did a system image restore a few months for one of my friends and it worked out fine.
--- Unfortunately I don't recall if he uses Norton Security but whatever paid security package he uses did not interfere with a successful system image restore.

    Another vote here for Macrium.

Both Windows' built-in system imaging and Macrium use the VSS service to take a snapshot of the live system in order to back it up to an image. Whether the AV is running or not should make no difference once the snapshot has been created. Of course, when you restore an image you are booting to the recovery environment where there will be no AV running.

MS have been saying that System Image Backup was a deprecated feature since the Fall Creators Update. Basically it means that development has ceased and that it may well be removed in a future version.

We recommend that users use full-disk backup solutions from other vendors.

I hope you see the light and switch to Macrium Reflect. There is no need to turn off Defender.
