    Macrium Reflect errors regarding "Macrium Reflect.lnk" can't access

    I followed the link to update my version of MR. It failed with a reference to a file it could not find or access. I cancelled the update, tried to run my usual backup. It failed withe the same error. Eventually I deleted the program and created a new version that threw the same error asking to verify if I could access the folder or the .lnk file. I'm suspicious that i have rights problem. Does anyone know the name and normal location of this file to troubleshoot?

    (edit) I tried again using "run as administrator", backup proceed further than before, but failed again, this time with error "failed to create volume snapshot".

    Uninstall it, reinstall it.

    @cereberus

    Thanks for your reply. That's what I meant by "delete" the program. A new version gave the "failed to create volume snapshot" error. Sorry for the confusion.

    (edit)

    I found an old post @Bree that suggested an MR troubleshooter for VSS problems. I ran it and tried backup again as suggested. same error,
    failed to create snapshot.

    You say asking to verify if I could access the folder or the .lnk file doesnt it say the folder? Are you using the same account as the one that installed it first time

    Hi there

    @George
    sometimes there isn't sufficient space on HDD to create the VSS - delete all old junk and try again. Otherwise a "get around" temporarily is to use the Stand alone Boot restore version -- the stand alone version doesn't use VSS.

    @Samuria
    UR asking for the same info I have been seeking in order to attempt repair. The error messages don't supply it, only refers to failure to create snapshot. @jimbo45
    The only place I have limited disk space is on the external ssd i am trying to backup to. I need to delete the last backup to make room for the new one . That would seem to ruin your suggested work-around, which in any case is way above my pay-grade but thank you, thank you for your advice! I'm going to look for a Plan B.

    (EDIT)
    I just found Release Preview 1809 Build 17763.404 waiting for restart. 1) Restarted 2) cleaned up the minor stuff (did not even empty the trash) 3) started MR. I was so sure it would not run, I did not even bother selecting the Verify option. It started and ran through until 97% complete when it bogged down and would not complete. VERY strange- system says it's running. Disk write and read lights stay on. Percent completion remains fixed at 97%. No way to interrupt except for a Hard reboot. The disk showed two files, zero bytes and about 3/4 disk space used. Finally had to reformat the drive.
    I restarted MR using the previously saved MR file that included automatic verify option. It ran to completion and i have a backup! Don't know whether 1), 2) or 3) or something else solved the problem. Whether or not I can trust this disk is another story. I'll buy a new one soon.

    Hi there
    @George

    Did you try the stand alone version of Macrium to back up your system -- the stand alone version will backup to external HDD/SSD's and doesn't use VSS. You need to ensure space is about 5% more than the last backup took available on the backup destination disk (external disk in your case).

    If running ONLINE -- i.e from within Windows you need to ensure for VSS that the internal (Windows HDD/SSD) has around 30% of the free space that the windows base install uses - e.g if your windows system is 50GB you need to ensure that there's around 20GB free space.

    Cheers

    Hello @jimbo45
    I have the "free" version downloaded from Macrium, which would seem to be the stand alone version according to their FAQs. I don't understand how to run it other than from within Windows What am I missing here? Thanks, George
