    Failed to Create Volume Snapshot Macrium Error 0x8004230f VSS Error

    Hi,

    So I upgraded my SSD from 250GB to 1TB, I used Clonezilla to clone my disk and I deleted all the extra partitions it had copied over. I assume this is where the restore or backup files were. Windows booted fine and I tried to do a backup with Paragon which failed. I thought to try a different backup software and found Macrium, so I tried with that and got an error message:

    Failed: Failed - 0x8004230f - IDispatch error #8463 - Retrying without VSS Writers
    ERROR: COM call "m_pVssObject->AddToSnapshotSet((LPWSTR)volume.c_str(), GUID_NULL, &SnapshotID)" failed.
    - Returned HRESULT = 0x8004230f
    - Error text: VSS_E_UNEXPECTED_PROVIDER_ERROR
    ERROR: COM call "m_pVssObject->BackupComplete(&pAsync)" failed.
    - Returned HRESULT = 0x80042301
    - Error text: VSS_E_BAD_STATE
    ERROR: COM call "m_pVssObject->AddToSnapshotSet((LPWSTR)volume.c_str(), GUID_NULL, &SnapshotID)" failed.
    - Returned HRESULT = 0x8004230f
    - Error text: VSS_E_UNEXPECTED_PROVIDER_ERROR

    I have run the VSS Fix Problems and still no luck.
    I have tried the solution here https://kb.macrium.com/KnowledgebaseArticle50043.aspx but no result. I have set the Volume Copy Shadow in Services to start automatically. Rebooted and it was started.
    I have uninstalled Paragon using Revo Uninstaller and still get the same message.
    I ran vssadmin list writers and there were no errors.
    I ran vssadmin list shadowstorage and it states - No items found for this query.

    I tried to check Windows System Restore settings in Configure System Restore and get error message 0X81000203 with everything greyed out. I cannot select anything in System Protection. I cannot create a system restore point.

    I assume when I deleted those other hidden partitions, something went wrong. I recreated a separate partition for the restore part of Windows but not sure if that will work for the restore to fix.

    Does anyone have any ideas of what I can do to fix this problem? I just don't want to reboot into Hiren's Boot Recovery to do backups every time. I have been working on this problem for two weeks now. I assume something happened with my new SSD that has caused the problem and the fact I delete those extra hidden partitions which more than likely had the restore or system recovery on them. OS I am using is Windows 10 Education I got from uni.

    Hi, can you confirm you could create disk images when booted using the smaller original SSD?

    VSS error VSS_E_UNEXPECTED_PROVIDER_ERROR (0x8004230F) when creating an image

    Try that idea.. I skimmed the MR article you quoted, don't think it mentioned it, but you said
    you had run VSSADMIN LIST PROVIDERS - so please confirm MS only listed.

    I assume when I deleted those other hidden partitions
    Whilst you can delete the Recovery partition (and so lose the ability to boot to Safe Mode, System Restore etc etc and automatic repair) I'm worried you say 'partitions' - plural - just which ones did you delete?

    They are so small they should really make no difference.

    Their presence or absence should make no difference to MR.

    Well, there were 3 extra partitions and I am not sure how they were created. Two behind the OS and one in front of the OS, they were about 4GB in total. I was already getting this error message before I wiped those partitions.

    I have tried the command vssadmin list providers and the default one is in there. I have looked at the registry entry and it is the correct one and nothing extra is added in there. I went to Services > My Computer > COM+ Applications and no providers were listed in there.

    I will have a read of that link you provided.

    Typical UEFI installation should have these:
    Failed to Create Volume Snapshot Macrium Error 0x8004230f VSS Error-snap-2019-02-17-14.50.36.png

    MBR - fewer

    I have a full disk no other partitions on the disk. I mean one partition only.

    I restored from a previous backup and found out that my PC was booting from Disk Zero and not the Windows disk, so had to recreated the MBR. Which seems to work now. But still have that VSS problem.

    Hi, you might try this:
    Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy (VSS) Troubleshooting - Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy (VSS) Troubleshooting

    or the free cautious repair tool
    Tweaking.com - Windows Repair Free/Pro
    - observing the steps and using only the relevant repairs

    More:
    How to Fix VSS Errors Step-by-Step

    Otherwise I suggest- assuming your disk and file system are sound-
    an in-place upgrade repair install which keeps all progs, data and most settings

    You need an iso of the same base language and build- freely downloadable.

    I can't use the old disk, I already formated it and reinstalled Windows on it for my Nephews PC,.

    I read that article and when I list writers they are Stable with no errors and when I list providers only MS is listed. So now cofused.

    Excuse my slowness today, is it an in-place upgrade your #6?

    I am still looking on Google for an answer. I have tried the Tweaking.com utility and still the same error message.
