Is File Backup in Win 10 being deprecated by M$?

I was considering using this feature in Win 10, until I read a post saying that it is being deprecated

I thought that I should check with the guys here before doing anything.

Yes it is. MS even said to use a 3rd party app. A lot of us use Macrium Reflex Free and if works great.

Hi, if you're referring to File History, there was a point in Windows' history when it was thought it might be going to be deprecated
File History to be removed? Solved - Windows 10 Forums

    - but not as far as I know.

However, if you wish to do specific file backup (disk imaging with Macrium reflect free being quite different) then yes, use a 3rd party program or even consider, say, Microsoft's Synctoy which is recommended by those who've used it.

If you are referring to Backup and Restore (Win 7) that is not recommended.

Whenever anyone asks about 'Backup & Restore (Windows 7)' the natural assumption is that they mean the System Image Backup. But it has two functions, there is a files/folders backup function that is quite separate from the SIB one. To date, MS have specifically stated only that SIB is deprecated.

The fate of 'files backups' is unknown, MS have said nothing official either way. Anyone who says it's also deprecated is reading more into the MS statement than is actually there. Personally I think it may be true but as I said, there is no official statement from MS.

    Microsoft said:

We recommend that users use full-disk backup solutions from other vendors.

In my opinion Backup & Restore is an awful way to back up your files and folders. The reason being that the backup set is a series of multiple .zip files, each no larger than 200MB. It is near-impossible to manually extract a file from such a backup set, particularly the large files that will span many of the .zip files. The only way is the use Backup & Restore which can read the catalog files that index these .zip archives. That of course relies on you having a working system with Backup & Restore installed. So if/when Backup & Restore is removed from Windows you will not be able to restore anything.

File History on the other hand stores its backups in the History folder as unmodified copies, save for appending a date stamp to each filename.

File History is still there it was due to be migrated into another area but that never seemed to happen. Mine is still going after 5 years. Last checked a few days ago and seems OK.

System Image does not work properly with Windows 10, never did with me anyway, although it seemed to be OK with Windows 8.1.
Whether this is being deprecated I don't know, not that it matters as it seems useless.

So you will definitely need another application for a System Image. There are a number of free ones that do the basics. I use Macrium.

Long time ago, I used SyncToy until I ran across a nasty bug that MS will never fix. Instead of copying filename.type from one location to another, it instead creates filename(1).type, and doesn't overwrite the original filename.type. MS publicly states that SyncToy is not supported.

I have been using Retrospect for about 10 years now to manage backups on my home LAN of two desktops and two laptops. However, the most recent release has some really nasty bugs in it, so I'm considering alternatives. I wnat something that does more than simply keep the latest copies of files. I need something that can restore previous versions of a file. That feature in Retrospect has saved me more than a few times due to user error.

That function is available using File History.

...you can browse through a timeline, select the version you want, and restore it.

I appreciate the information here. It has caused me to rethink my plan and continue with Macrium Reflect.
If you have the time and interest could you tell me if my plan below, prior to learning about this new info, would work, theoretically?

    >>I am running Windows 11 and it is backed up to 2 external drives with Macrium. They both work with the rescue media so all is fine.
The issue is one external drive is exfat and the other is NTFS.Windows back up, if you care to use it, only works with NTFS not exfat. Is here a way to change that exfat drive to NTFS so it too will work with Windows backup if I choose to use it without losing data?<<

    Thank you for your help.
@Dallchina - thank you for those great referrals however I only have need to perform a full image of my system every few days as I keep all data on two separate flash drives that are always with me.
