Win 10 Build 1809 did NOT solve the system image problem in backup!

I was told 1809 would fix the issue with creating and image in backup but it didn't! Now what? Do I really have to buy some third party software to protect my system?

Hi, are you referring to Backup and Restore (Windows 7) or something else?

MS's own recommendation is to use 3rd party tools. You may have noticed Macrium reflect (free) ---- did I say free? ---- is perfectly adequate - or more than- for most users for disk imaging. There's a commercial version that adds features and allows access to the forum.

Regularly updated and very well documented. Many use it here- very very often recommended.

    Hi Ron.

Use Macrium Reflect (Free). Very reliable and used by members.

Backup and Restore with Macrium Reflect

Tutorial is a little out of date but it will get you there.

Your specs say you have 32-bit Windows 10. While it is true that Backup & Restore's system imaging was broken in 32-bit Windows 10 with the release of 1803...

In 1803 build 17134.1 32-bit (x86) as released on 30th April creating a system image fails with "The RPC server is unavailable. (0x800706BA)". This happens with an upgrade or a clean install. Creating a system image works correctly in 1803 x64, it's just the 32-bit version that fails.

... I tested the initial release of 1809 build 17763.1 (with its CU to 17763.55) and found it was working again in 1809. There is an outside chance that with the re-release of 1809 (build 17763.107) media system imaging got broken again, so I will test that.

I have clean installed 32-bit 1809 using the second release of the install media as created by the Media Creation Tool. The re-released 1809 is build 17763.107.

A system image can be created successfully.....

...and the image can be restored.

@RonHarsh, there is no obvious reason why it should not work for you too. While I too would recommend Macrium Reflect Free, the Microsoft system imaging should work for you in 1809. I will try to get to the bottom of this and get it working for you.

Was yours a clean install or an upgrade? If an upgrade, how did you do it? Checking for updates in Windows Update? Using the Update Assistant? Or an in-place upgrade using an ISO or USB downloaded by the MCT?

In particular, if this was an upgrade from 1803 to 1809, had you applied any of the fixes mentioned in the previous thread to that 1803?

Thanks! I have not tried to create an image independent of a scheduled backup but I will. I just checked the box to create an image when doing the backup and that failed in 1809 as well as 1803. Thanks for your help, I will try an independent image creation. My Win 10 is ALL online updates from Microsoft and I have applied all the patches and updates thru Window Update in the Setting dialog.

Should you use Macrium, which is highly recommended, please ensure you create boot mentioned in the tutorial.

I purchased Macrium and with it you get Image Guard which prevents unauthorized access (changes) to your backups and also allow you to build backups at the folder level. The unauthorized access guards against unwelcomed guest like Ransomware.

Pretty sure you will like Macrium.

I have never liked Backup & Restore for backing up user files, not even when I used Windows 7. My main objection was that it saves the documents in a multitude of .zip files that for practical purposes can only be accessed and restored by Backup & Restore itself. I much prefer a backup solution that can be explored by File Manager should the backup program no longer be available, copies of the backed up files rather than a proprietary packaged format. Windows 10's File History does that, but my personal solution is a batch file that uses the RoboCopy command.

As such I have never included a system image in a scheduled backup. I only ever use it independently. I doubt if you will find it behaves any differently though. System imaging is a completly separate executable from the files backup part of Backup and Restore, all that including a system image in a backup does is to call the system imaging program once it has backed up the user files.

My suspicion is that your update to 1809 has somehow failed to replace the faulty 1803 version of C:\Windows\System32\wbengine.exe. Check the properties of yours and compare with these, in particular whether the product version says 17763 or 17134.

(It may say 16299 if you had tried the solution of replacing wbengine.exe with the working one from 1709)

In addition to image guard, great feature, licensed Reflect enables email notification to be sent out after the image backup. Most of my small clients have licensed Reflect with daily full image backup and an email sent to me when successful. Failed backup email is sent to the client only....

Forgot to mention the "Add Recovery Boot Menu..." option that negates the need for rescue media, available in the free version too. No need to search for the flashdrive for the system at hand...

Yes I use the email option as well.

Wouldn't you still need rescue media in the case where the drive itself fails?
