    PE10 zip folder, Macrium Reflect

I did an on line install of Macrium Reflect yesterday and created the boot menu option. My question is was i supposed to have extracted the files from the PE 10 zip file? i can not seem to find an answer to this or did i just not do the obvious

Macrium can build PE10 rescue media and the boot menu. If you do not already have the PE10 download Macrium will prompt you to download it from Microsoft. There is no need to unzip anything, Macrium will extract the files it needs when you ask it to build the PE10 rescue media.

Did you know that new for Macrium Reflect 7.2 is the option to build RE 10 rescue media instead? This uses the WinRE from your installed Windows as the source rather than a download.

Windows RE is usually available as a no download option on the majority Windows installations from Windows 7 and later.

OK, not trying to hijack this thread, but I need some guidance. I'm confused, when I installed MR and created my first Rescue Media, the recommendation was for the Win RE option. Up until a day or so ago I was fat, dumb and happy. Now I have to ask, with my PC (less than two years old) which should I be using PE or RE? Right now I've got both.

FWIW, G's Laptop definitely needs RE for the Wi-Fi support.

WiFi support is only needed if you intend to restore an image from a network drive, such as a NAS or the Cloud. Both PE and RE rescue media (on a usb or added to the boot menu) work fine if the image is on a local HDD, either another drive in the PC or an external usb HDD.

RE seems to be recommended in 7.2 mainly on the grounds that you don't need to download anything from Microsoft.

Rescue and Image are on USB 3.0 Flash/Thumb drives. I do also have a Rescue made on a DVD here for my Desktop. OK?

Now the question arises, is initial MR Boot Menu option created with PE (I'm guessing) need to match whatever I've got on the DVD or Thumb Drive? How would I change that anyway?

You can boot from anything to restore an image, RE or PE. Doesn't matter what type of media you had as your default when you made the image. Personally i have RE for my boot menu, but have put PE on my usb recovery media. This is only because the PE media is smaller (230MB) than the RE media (about 640MB) and leaves a bit more room on a usb stick for images.

You can change the type you make by clicking the Advanced button at the bottom of the Rescue Media Builder and choosing a different Base WIM.

AH HA! So whatever I build on the DVD/Stick, MR builds the appropriate one for the Boot Option loading Windows 10 "normally". And yes that's what I did to build the RE versions of my Rescue.

My thought process being if things go badly (enough) I nay not have internet or any of the resources I may need, other than what's on my Image. Just trying to cover all the possibilities that CAN happen. I know I may not have everything I need, but I'm trying.

As always @Bree I do appreciate your time and patience with me. I'm still very new to MR.

Macrium has a 'Staging Area' in which it keeps its built media. When you add it to the boot menu or make usb/dvd media it is copied from the Staging Area to the chosen destination. You can only have one build in the Staging Area at any one time, but you can change that build to another one without changing the boot menu as that uses the copy that was placed in the in C:\Boot folder when you added the boot menu. I do a lot of imaging and restores (mainly for my test machine, System Two below). For a long time I stuck with the built-in Microsoft system imaging, but I switched to Macrium in May this year when Microsoft broke system imaging in 32-bit 1803. Wish I'd switched sooner, wouldn't use anything else now.

It does mean that by now I'm possibly one of TenForum's most experienced user of Microsoft system imaging . That puts me in the almost unique position of being able to compare the Macrium and MS products in depth. There are subtle differences between a system restored by Macrium and one restored from an MS image.

MS imaging has a lot of significant failings serious limitations endearing quirks and I've probably learned to cope with or work round most of them by now . MS imaging was as reliable for me as Macrium, as long as I took care not to put a foot wrong. One false step though - then it can't even find the image to restore...
