    Backup Failure

I'm Nnot my problem will have a solution. Stupidity reigns.

    Win10 1803..

I backed up a few different ways to my ext drive.
I have have backups with xml files and one with zip files. Don't ask me how.
I tried restoring and ended up with all the necessary thunderbird files individually on the desktop among a hundred others, and only if I leave the correct ones there, will thunderbird start and run properly.
I can certainly delete the ones I don't need but have no idea what to leave.
I couldn't find a way to restore either file format and have no idea as to how to insert the files on the desktop back into the thunderbird profil if it even be done..

System restore for some reason only has the last 5 restore files(I haven't deleted any) and they end up in the same place.
If anyone can help, this forum is the only place for me to look.

    thanks in advance.

    Not enough detail. Clarification needed.

What were you trying to "back up"? Your entire Windows installation? Thunderbird only? Thunderbird and what else?

Describe some of those "few different ways"? By drag and drop? By using Application X, Y, and Z? By imaging?

If you just want to backup Thunderbird, that can normally be done by copying a single folder to a safe place. And later copying it back to restore. But I'm not sure what you are trying to do.

Is your PC generally running OK other than this backup issue?

System Restore isn't normally regarded as a "backup" although it can be useful. You have control over how much hard drive space is allotted to System Restore and it may be that you haven't allotted enough space for more than 5 restore points.

    Good Morning, ignatzatsonic..
    Thanks for your reply.

For years with win7, I simple created an image or even a clone to my 2nd drive with EasyBCD dual boot and always had an easy restore by restoring the image or booting to my other drive. All with MBR.

Now comes the win10 monster. Tells me what to do, when to do it, must update, when to update and in the process wants to totally maintain my PCs regardless of my choice.

I have mostly built my own Desktops for the last 30 yers but am now too old and tired, so I bought 2 new HP Pav 590s. It has an extra sata port but with EFI it makes it more difficult to dual boot. I prefer SSDs and have disconnected the provided HDD since it takes forever to boot. HP says this doesn't mess up the warranty on the hardware but might need to reconnect their HDD if they have to troubleshoot. In another post someone answered with a method of changing the boot routine.
My storage needs are minimal and in reality I don't need more that one partition set to MBR. I have 8Gb memory. I may do that yet.
Now I created an image sent to my ext drive as well as doing another? backup on that drive.. I havent yet found the way to directly restore the image back, so I went to the folders and files and attempted to copy them back to their original locations. At least that's what the screen told me. I'm sure I did something wrong but maybe win10 again wants it only their way.
So what happened was that it copied all the files, dlls, etc onto my desktop and as I mentioned, if I try to remove some of them, Thunderbird will not open. By leaving everything on the desktop Tbird continues to work.
I know quite well how to back up my Mozilla profiles and have never had a problem. Only with win10.
I was able to restore Firefox with no trouble.

I do thank you for your or anyone's help.

You say you previously created images or clones with Easy BCD. I've never used that application for that purpose.

My only recommendation would be to use Macrium Reflect to make an image of whatever state your PC is now in and use that going forward. It's by far the most commonly used imaging application on this forum and will backup up everything on the chosen partitions, including Thunderbird and your data (if any).

I wouldn't want to get myself in a position where I was reliant on System Restore. It usually "works", but usually isn't good enough.

You could also use Mozilla's own backup tool for Thunderbird if desired.

You might consider something other than imaging to backup your personal data as opposed to Windows.
