"So are you saying it’s a hard drive lock feature & not Macrium/image guardian?
In any case glad you’ve found the cause."
Yes, it certainly seems to be a hard drive lock problem (not a feature, as it is not supposed to malfunction as it now does) and I did not even open Macrium before the daily scheduled backup, so Image Guardian was left in its default setting of `on.'
I shall report here if and/or when I hear further from Western Digital, but I doubt that they will be able to confirm or disprove my KB-related theory quickly. In addition, and assuming that I remember to check the hard disk when waking the computer, to be certain it is unlocked, if the next few backups are successful I shall report that and mark the thread as solved.
Three successive days, three successive completed backups. This indicates that the problem was, as suspected, that the WD software has been improperly locking the external hard disk; I have overridden that to ensure that the disk can be written to when Macrium Reflect runs the scheduled backups. This thread shall be marked as solved.
In the on-going puzzlement about technical support, yesterday I was wondering why WD had not at least acknowledged my response to their email. Last night, I had a voice mail from WD, only part of which I could understand, asking that I either call them or reply to their latest email. Based on that call, I expected to find a new email from WD when I woke the computer this morning; there was no such item. I replied a second time to their only email, quoting my previous reply, and asking for a clarification.
A final word, namely that the problem has been solved. Doing some sleuthing, I determined that the WD drive software that I was using was out-of-date. It had worked until the install of the KB mentioned above in this thread; apparently, the WD software could no longer handle the procedure that called for the disc to be unlocked when the computer was awakened. (The software locks the disc when the computer goes to sleep.)
With the two WD programs updated, today at 1000 Local, I woke the computer, knowing that Macrium Reflect would have missed its 0900 Local backup. Shortly after the computer was again awake, Macrium began its missed backup, writing to the WD My Passport Ultra. After a few minutes, the backup was successfully completed.
In the immortal words of Pangloss, " tout est pour le mieux dans le meilleur des mondes possibles." Or, at least this problem has been fixed.
