I'm hoping to learn how to work the Macrium Reflect backup/restore process.
Until now, I've relied exclusively on System Restore, but..So please bear with me
One preliminary question:
I have only USB 2 functionality, not USB 3. Can I use a USB 2 drive to back up and restore in the Macrium Reflect free version.
I seem to recall seeing USB 3..But forgot precisely where I've seen that

Can I just leave the USB drive in the USB slot indefinitely and backup as I feel the need to? Then restore from there in case I have to?
Yes, it could. But image guardian is only available in the paid for version. If you have Macrium Reflect Free then you won't be able to use it.
As for USB2, three of the four machines I routinely make Macrium images for only have USB2. USB3 drives work fine on USB2. It's just slower, that's all.
It is kind of lost in all the advertising about MIG that MIG does not protect a user if the users pc is compromised beforehand, or it gets hijacked by some remote control method.
That is why removing drive completely is truly the only way to ensure integrity (assuming pc was not compromised before making the backup).
If concerned about the USB transfer speed there are Add-in cards to give USB 3 ports available. They can be had for Desktop computers with PCIe X1 or X4 slots and even for those Desktop computers with only PCI slots. I've added such a PCIe card to one of my Desktops to gain extra ports and considering one for a computer with only a PCI slot available. Not so easy to do with Notebooks, actually can't, would need a new motherboard but that's an issue due to the construction of Notebooks.

rather than add USB3 slots with PCIe consumer grade slots -- they are usually not very good quality -- you could get better performance by using sata / esata PCIe cards - peversly you will actually get better throughput even on a USB3 drive if you connect the USB3 drive to the sata / esata card via a USB3 adapter !!! sounds Bonkers but it certainly works (at least it does on my hardware - and of course if you use say an external SSD for backups a direct stat/esata connection speeds that up considerably too!!!!!!
Backups though - once taken should be removed from the machine -- whatever A/V software you use none of it can ever be guranteed to be 100% secure -- even if things like MF image guardian are extremely robust. Why bother to take the risk. I like backup on those small 4TB self powered USB drives which are easily stored and I have different colour ones so I know what's what .
