Missing most of my System Restore Points

    Hello:

I usually manually create system restore points before and after any installation/un-installation I do. I allocate 20% of disk space to System Restore.

A few hours ago, I noticed that I have only two days worth of SR points. I should have had about 10 days worth. I certainly have more than enough space for those. So it wasn't FIFO that could have eliminated them. Nor was there a Windows Update from when I last saw all my SR points.

What might have caused those SR point deletions, and how to prevent that in the future

    Eli

    Hi, welcome to tenforums.

This older article offers some ideas:
System Restore Points deleted or go missing in Windows 10/8/7

Thank you, Dalchina..But none of the possible causes described in that article apply to my situation.

There was plenty of disk space (20%), SR was not disabled, nor did I run a cleaner to delete all but last RP

Are you dual booting by any chance?

If by "dual-booting" you mean having more than one OS on the PC, then , no.

As for that article, system protection is configured to be: ON

System Restore is enabled and allocated 20% space on disk

    Hey eliuri,
Are you by chance seeing Restore Points labeled as Windows Module Installer ?

    Hi Eagle:

A few days ago, there was some option among my restore points to revert to some Windows- created checkpoint. It was a tad mysterious, since there had been no WU. Possibly, it was such a "Windows Module Installer" point referred to in that post you linked to... In any case, it is no longer is there, so I can't verify if that's what it was. Nor can I tell what was installed in that "module" . It was among the many RPs which were deleted.

What is that "Windows Defender Verification" they're talking about in that thread? In case that is what I had actually seen? There was only one instance of this in my case; not many, as was noted in that other thread. And I had seen no repetitions of that.

If in fact it was some "Windows Defender Verification" module, can this safely be stopped? Or is that a required part of the Windows Defender?

My main concern is that this might keep happening. And at some point I may need such RPs..

I got a feeling the Windows Defender Verification Task is what's wiping out your manually created Restore Points. The Windows Defender Verification Task runs every 24 hrs creating daily restore points. If restore points (yours and the WMI ones) are jut disappearing, then I don't what the issue might be.

It's one of 4 Windows Defender Default Task, located in Task Scheduler Library > Microsoft > Windows > Defender. Expand the Name Field so you can see the complete name > Right Click on Windows Defender Verification Task > Click Disable. I do not know what the side affects are when you disable that task, if there even are any.

My main concern is that this might keep happening. And at some point I may need such RPs..
MS has yet to give a clear answer as to why they started doing this or what it's purpose is, other than the obvious of creating daily restore points. These daily restore points will continue to be created, until MS stops it. I'm on Win10 - 1809 and it does it and I tell from the logs, it still tries to create them, but I don't use System Restore Points and have it turned off. I depend on Macrium Refelect Free for my backups.

I actually wouldnt mind it if Windows Defender automatically created RPs for me...Would save me the bother. As far as I'm concerned, the more RPs, the better. Gives me something to fall back on if things go awry

However, in my particular case , both my manually created RPs and the Windows one were deleted. It did leave a few RPs untouched--but most were gone.. Which is very different from what's being described in that other thread. There, the issue was the creation of unwanted daily RPs. It may well be the same bug that's responsible though....

At this point I still dont know...But sure would want to..

    Hi again:

I just checked and it seems that 2 or 3 of my least recent RPs were deleted. Leaving only 2 days worth..

Might there simply be some "quota" on how many youre allowed/per day? I find all this extremely vexing. System Restore usually works quite well for me to get out of a jam, which more often than not is not of my own doing...But that was back when I was on Windows 7
