Error 0x80070780 while trying system restore trough Windows Live CD

    Hi,
While trying system restore from a Windows 10 Live CD, I'am getting this 0x80070780 error for the file "D:\Users\Me\AppData\Local\Packages\AcerIncorporated.AcerPortal_48frkmn4z8aw..." (can't see complete name because the error window isn't resizable). I already searched for this file using command prompt and it seems to be absent from the "Packages" folder.
Windows doesn't start, even in safe mode. I can see the spinny load icon below the acer logo and then it disapears and instead of the log screen appearing, it just stays black.

I already tried chkdsk D: /r /f /v, it didn't find any corrupted file but the last line is "failed to transfer logged messages to the event log with status 50".

"sfc /scannow" returns "the windows resource protection could not perform the requested operation"

"DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth" returns "dism does not support servicing windows pe with the /online option"
As suggested here, I tried dism.exe /image:\ /cleanup-image /revertpendingactions but after it ended successfully and after restarting my laptop, sfc /scannow didn't work better.

The laptop is an Acer Aspire-5 A515-51G-8536 with windows 10 familly installed on it. (no other OS installed)

I might have missed some infos, feel free to ask for it.

Thanks in advance for any help,

    Lantha

Hi, could you please download and create a live boot disk from Kyhi's ISO, Windows PE with utilities, from the top of the Software and Apps section here?

Boot your PC from that, then run HD Tune on from it to check your disk, both Health and Error scan tabs and post a screenshot of the results.

If those are ok, here's how to use SFC offline: (no need to create the Win 10 disk as you'll have Kyhi's)
How to run the sfc /scannow command if Windows 10 does not boot

Please state what disk you have & HDD or SSD etc.

History: could you paint a brief picture? E.g.
My PC has been behaving erratically for a couple of weeks and now it won't boot...
Yesterday my dog pulled the power cord out and now it won't boot
I had an update and my PC restarted and now it won't boot.....

Do you have disk images e.g. Acronis TI, Macrium reflect (free), Aomei Backupper...
We so often urge people to use disk imaging routinely.. allows quick recovery even if your disk has failed.

Otherwise do you have full backups?
How difficult would a clean install be for you? (Do you have many programs installed e.g?)

    Thanks.

Quick reply here, I will test Kyhi's ISO as soon as possible.

    Other than that :

This laptop has a 256GB SSD and a 1TB HDD.

The laptop started having blue screens after some windows updates and every time we restarted it Windows Update kept saying there was an update ready. I also updated the nvidia driver alongside the windows updates. After some time the pc started having blue screens every time a few seconds after the login screen was showing up.
So I tried a system recovery using the recovery menu of the laptop (the one that opens when Windows fails to start 3 times, not the one of the Live CD). The system recovery stopped with an undefined error and even though it said it didn't change anything to the system files, after that, the login screen never showed up again, just a black screen as I described earlier.

One of the BSOD said "SESSION1_INITIALIZATION_FAILED (0x0000006D)"

So I just burned the ISO and tried to boot from it but it doesn't appear in the boot menu. The BIOS is a weird one, you can't add any entry in the boot menu, they just appear out of nowhere when a bootable device is detected. The windows live CD got detected but the new kyhi's one doesn't. It's just like when I tried with a Knoppix dvd before, it didn't detect it either and there is no way to add the cd/dvd boot option by hand. I am sure it should get detected because it was burnt just like the Knoppix one and I already used the Knoppix dvd successfully before on other laptops.
When I put the Windows 10 Live CD back in the laptop it gets detected right away.

It feels like there is only one thing left to do even though I tried not to come to that point because it's so annoying to reinstall and reconfigure everything : I'll have to reset Windows...

    Any last suggestion ?

I found I had to set my BIOS to non-UEFI to boot Kyhi's disk - I have it on DVD.
My laptop BIOS has only very limited options.

Sounds like you should do a clean install given that level of difficulty. And check your disks are ok.

As soon as you have Windows booting again, as early as possible start using disk imaging (e.g. Macrium Reflect (free) + large enough external storage) so if sthg goes wrong you can quite easily get back to a working situation.

HDTune scans finished, here are the results
    Attachment 204935Attachment 204936Attachment 204937Attachment 204938
    Both my drives seem OK

Now for sfc/scannow, what's the system reserved partition they are talking about in the link you posted ?
    I only have these :
    Attachment 204939
"Data C:" is just files not related to the system "Acer D:" is with all the system files The CD is kyhi's iSO and the "boot X:" I actually don't know but I think you do. What drives should I point to in the sfc /scannow command ?

EDIT : in diskpart, "list volume" command gives two hidden partitions "ESP" and "Recovery" (it does not mention the boot X: partition btw)

EDIT 2 : on the system disk (Acer D: 256GB) there are 3 partitions alongside the primary, which one is the system reserved ?

Hi, great your disks are ok.

Now I have your further description e.g.
So I tried a system recovery using the recovery menu of the laptop (the one that opens when Windows fails to start 3 times, not the one of the Live CD). The system recovery stopped with an undefined error and even though it said it didn't change anything to the system files, after that, the login screen never showed up again, just a black screen as I described earlier.

as I said, I'd recommend you do a clean install. Do you have backups of everything? If not, you can now check and /or create backups as necessary before doing that.

You need to work out the drive letter assigned to your Windows partition as viewed from the command prompt. You can do that simply by experiment- change the drive letter, then DIR.

    Crude, but it works.

Don't expect even a successful SFC /SCANNOW to resolve the sort of issues you've reported. You'd be extremely lucky.

Ok sfc /scannow didn't find anything... (can't help it sorry, I just wanted to try everything before giving up)
I'll re-install windows and give you an update about that later.

For now I have quick questions about maintenance : What's the difference between
    Attachment 204955Attachment 204956

Is there any other native recovery option apart from restore points that help you get windows back and running without having to re-install and setup every program ?

Should I use non-windows software instead of the windows native tools to make recovery drives, system images, ... ?
Thanks a lot for all the help so far
