Is backup of apps possible before a reset??

Hello, when doing a reset you can choose "keep personal files", but it will still delete all your apps that you have installed that were not included with the pc. Is it possible to back these apps up in order to restore after the reset is finished?? Thanks!

The issue with 'apps' is they have to be installed after a reset so as to create Start menu items, copy support files into various locations as they need and most importantly create the Registry entries so Windows knows how to run the programs.

Back up the apps and NOTHING BUT the apps?

    Not that I know of.

You'd be better off thinking of how to backup entire partitions--including apps, personal data, or whatever else happens to be on the partition.

Thanks, this is what I was starting to understand after lots of googling to find a good answer! Guess I'll just prepare to re-install all of them again At least a list of removed apps is provided!!

Yeah, I was also trying to find out in what exact location are user apps stored, but as @Berton just pointed out, properly installed user apps have "tentacles" that are needed in many locations. Thanks!

@mad4some, the question is, why do you feel a reset is necessary? Do you think reinstalling Windows is the only way to fix some problems? If so, try an in-place repair upgrade first - that allows you to keep all your user files AND installed apps, but reinstalls windows and resets some settings to defaults.

If you're having problems with Windows 10 on your PC, you could use push-button reset to refresh or reset Windows.
    ...
The options above are great for what they are intended for, but you could also do a repair install of Windows 10 by performing an in-place upgrade without losing anything other than all installed Windows Updates.

My PC refuses to take the major updates without freezing (at 33% or 42% etc.) and I have tried hours and hours of troubleshooting tips in order to fix it......to no avail. So for the last 2, I have been doing a reset and then my PC will take the update . I am getting ready for the October/Redstone update and might try the in-place repair this time instead. Thanks!

You might have the same problem with the in-place repair update then. Or maybe not - were you letting Windows Update handle the previous major updates? Often a manual install using the ISO or USB made by the Media Creation Tool will work where where windows update fails to upgrade you. Also, remove any third-party AV before upgrading, some have been known to make the upgrade fail (Avast in particular).

Either way, I'd wait until 1809 is released around mid-October, then try a manual in-place upgrade. It's exactly the same process as described it the tutorial, except it should upgrade you from 1803 to 1809 at the same time.

Thanks, I've tried all the above numerous times and have only been able to get it to work after a reset........but I'll keep my fingers crossed!!

If you try the in-place upgrade and it fails, it should give a two part error code on the last screen. This can be used to diagnose the problem. There are also various error logs that can be examined. If the upgrade fails, tell us the error codes and we can take it from there...
