Windows Modules Installer listed in System Restore points

Every day, for at least three or four weeks, "Windows Modules Installer" is listed in System Restore points as being a restore item. What, Why and How would this be happening? Is there a way to find out what the installer is trying to install (and why it runs every day)?

    Thanks for any help

Interesting discussion of this apparently fairly common phenomenon on Reddit: What do restore point mean? : Windows10.

EdTittle - Thanks for quick reply. I checked for any failed installs but going back 2 months have only successful installs. Guess I'll just learn to 'live with it'.

    Thanks again

    Hey CRGibson,
MS changed something approx 1 month ago ... what/why/how we don't know. What we do know, it's the Windows Defender Verification Task in Task Scheduler that's creating these daily restore points by Windows Modules Installer. You have two options to stop this from happening ... Disable System Restore or Disable the Windows Defender Verification Task.

Note: We are seeing this in the Win10 Insider Previews as well, so doesn't appear MS is going to undo/change this behavior any time soon, but that's just a guess.

Interesting read, and something I was not aware of. I just checked and I have a Windows Modules Installer SR point every day starting Sept 1st.

I just disable the Windows Defender Verification task as suggested so that should fix it for now.

I have a Windows Modules Installer SR point every day starting Sept 1st.

I think the last update fixed that. I had a daily restore point for Windows Modules Installer until maybe 9/1 or 2 but NONE since then (I check in the CCleaner almost daily). I only show the manual points that I create after tinkering. You should probably test for a couple days by re-enabling the Defender Verification task.

I disabled System Restore vs the WD Verification Task and the WD Verification Task / Windows Modules Installer is still trying to create restore points as of today ... on both my PC's.
    CBS Log Snippet ...
    Code:
2018-09-07 12:10:54, Info CBS Exec: Creating restore point: Package: Microsoft-Windows-Foundation-Package~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~10.0.17134.1, current: Installed, targeted: Installed
2018-09-07 12:10:54, Info CBS Restore point type: Install
2018-09-07 12:10:54, Info CBS Perf: Begin: nested restore point - begin
    2018-09-07 12:10:54, Info CBS Failed setting restore point [HRESULT = 0x80070422 - ERROR_SERVICE_DISABLED]
2018-09-07 12:10:54, Info CBS Exec: Begin: nested restore point - failed, ignoring and continuing. [HRESULT = 0x80070422 - ERROR_SERVICE_DISABLED]
Note: If you look in C:\Windows\servicing\Sessions you'll probably see that Component Based Servicing is also doing it's thing (creating xxxx_xxxx.xml files) and the time stamps correspond to the WD Verification Task.

    UPDATE:
Just checked my Win10 Pro IP (1809-17755.1) updated today and the WD Verification Task is creating restore points.

It seems, you can disable it in CCleaner, also. . . worked for me, anaway. ✔

I checked my ccleaner & Windows Defender Verification wasn't listed. I still get a system restore point every day (which is OK by me...I'm just curious why I'm getting it if Defender Verification isn't on).

Edited: Wrong. I didn't look far enough. It's enabled. However, since I was creating a SR point daily anyhow, I can leave it...although I do a backup with Macrium Reflect every day & trust that much more than system restore.

Mine is creating almost daily windows module installer restore points. I normally create a restore point once a month so if I have a problem, I can go back and get it instead of reloading the machine and spending 2 Fing days getting it back to where it needs to be. Now, my manual restore points are wiped out. This is frustrating. I didn't disable the defender verification, I don't want to risk being without protection if nobody knows exactly what that does. It has to be some kind of a bug and I am thinking it came with the Aug 15th cumulative update I received, or maybe later. This is typically a great running machine and SFC passes so I have not a clue what to do.

    Thanks for any ideas.
