An SSD would normally only be prone to static damage when handled in its 'raw' state i.e. not connected to its supporting circuitry. That is when you really do need to use appropriate cautions when handling.
Once connected/fitted to a suitable caddy then it should be no more/less prone to damage than a normal drive fitted to the same caddy.
Agree but as this is going to be a backup that is being connected, disconnected and moved it will likely be Raw state a lot.

Yes please the OP needs to keep it in a caddy. Handling of a bare drive will lead to a disaster. But also what is the working set size. The 1TB SSD for just under $200, is attractive but if your backup working size is greater than 1TB, you need something bigger. For $200 you can easily get 6TB spinner, however I don't believe they make 2.5" drives that size.
