That's great that you were able to boot and save needed files.
Which step do you think fixed the boot?

Spotfix is often a quick method to check the drive file system.
For a deeper fix and recovery the chkdsk /r command is used.
Earlier this was not able to complete.

Sometimes running chkdsk on drive partitions involved in the boot can be useful.
For example Macrium may not be able to make a backup image or clone and produce an error message.
A cluster run error would require a chkdsk /r on the EFI partition and not the data partition.
A drive letter is assigned to the hidden partition.
Then chkdsk /r M: is ran changing M to the assigned drive letter.

If cloning works then you are set.
If cloning fails copy and paste of the main or individual user folders is another option (perform overnight as it may take many hours)

I think what fixed it was repeatedly running the FIX lba (Fast) function in the SeaTools program. While it's a free program, there's some peculiar maximum number of LBA error fixes imposed (50). For a given session, it wouldn't do more than 50. But I found that when I exited the program and restarted it, I could re-run the process and get further towards completion before it would fail due to the LBA count maximum. Unfortunately, it's a long and slow process. When 80% was reached and it failed and that repeated once more and failed at about 80% again on the subsequent try, I figured it was time to see if the drive would boot. The hope being that the "essential" part of the system was now fixed and the remaining errors would be in the user data portion of the drive.

So I installed the HDD back into the laptop and cold booted. It took a while for the start-up to finish, but I got to the login screen and it brought up the desktop interface promptly. From there I went to the drive properties menu and ran the check for errors. It did find some. So I got "chkdsk /f" queued up, rebooted and it completed with no problem. Next, after verifying the Event Viewer, I ran CHKDSK /SPOTFIX and that seemed to accomplish some corrections. But I still wasn't convinced the drive was OK, so I ran the CHKDSK /R /F /X. That took a LONG time (about 7 hours). But it completed and then I could get into the next phase of cloning.

Oddly enough, when I tried to use the Samsung Data Migration Tool, it kept telling me the copy already occurred and the SSD is ready. But... no O/S on it. I deleted the partitions and tried again. Nothing. So I went to Macrium Reflect and cloned the drive. The first attempt failed after the 1st 3 partitions were created. The error was in writing to the target drive. I suspect the cable is not 100% solid and I might have moved it. So the next round was to clone the C: partition. That's happening now, taking a VERY long time, but I'm just over 60% and it's still going. I'm going to invest in a better cable after this.

UPDATE: Forgot to revisit this topic. The clone completed. It was a very slow process, nearly 6 hours for a roughly 650Gb partition that's only 60% full. I'm wondering if perhaps the HDD enclosure I'm using caused a bottleneck, but it's USB 3.0 capable and supports SATA III 6Gb/s.
