Not so with Macrium for Windows--free version (not to mention the Rescue media--even with SMB1 installed), Macrium does not show the mapped drive for USB as a Local Disk, and I found it impossible to find a way to include it somehow.
Initially when booted to the Macrium PE10 recovery media there are no mapped drives. I clicked the 'network drive' icon in the PE Explorer (top left) to map some drives. You'll see two network drives I had already mapped as Y: and Z: in my screenshot, with a third about to be mapped. You can also open a command prompt and use the NET USE command.

The password protected sharing is another issue. I don't think I want to turn this off, though it's probably safe to do so in my home environment. I have used it for as long as I can remember!
With Password Protected sharing turned off your shares and files are still protected. Access is still being controlled by the Share permissions and the ntfs file permissions. What you can see is determined by the name you use to connect. By default Windows will try to connect to the other PC with the name and password you used to sign into this PC. If they don't match an account on the PC you are connecting to you will be challenged for a name/password that exists on the remote PC.

The one share I couldn't map to was a usb HDD being shared by my router. That was because my router only supports SMB1 and Macrium 7.2 uses the 1709 version of WinPE.
    Hi Bree -

I assume you are referring to Windows PE 10. Why are they still on 1709?

    Just want to be sure...

    Thanks.

Yes. PE10 has only just moved up to using 1709 with the release of Macrium 7.2. Prior to that they use 1607, as I recall. Why so old? For stability, I'd guess.

Of course, if you build the new RE media in 7.2 it uses whatever version of WinRE your PC has in it's recovery environment, so that's RE 1809 in my case.

This is a pretty long post, it's a report of what I found by researching and working with three different software backup packages. This would be of interest to you if you are comparing popular backup software, particularly if you plan to use it to back up over a network or USB share.

Once again, the main concern in my case has been that, since I've been saving backups to my NAS on my network, and also attempting to save to a USB share on a router, what do I do if I have to restore a backup of my OS disk? I have to use bootable Rescue Media for that. Trouble is, I found it difficult to access my network after loading such media. Often there are hoops to go through with user credentials, and for example Paragon says you may need to load the INF file for the LAN controller; but then I get a message that the "Selected INF file does not include AMD drivers suitable for the device," even after I finally figured out which INF file to load (based on a Paragon FAQ). Then I found out that the LAN controller was already loaded by Win PE. The LAN is theoretically working, but I still can't get to the shares from the Rescue disk. The Macrium Win PE disk was no better for me in this regard, with similar difficulty getting the Network connected in the Rescue Media. Macrium provides even fewer options to connect.

I should also mention that I am only comparing the Free versions of the software here. Some give you more in the paid version, but I'm not sure network access issues are going to be any different.

This thread is originally about Paragon. I found Paragon Backup 17 Free fairly simple to use, with some good features. For data backup, it provides File and Folder backup options as well (Macrium Free doesn't), and I think it is one of few free ones where you can go down a list and tick off the boxes for the files and folders you want to back up, instead of backing up a whole folder or whole partition. This is a great option to have. Paragon 17 Free also allows you to schedule Full, Differential or Incremental backups, so I think I will continue to use it for data backup. From Windows I can even find and save to the USB share on my router. I can't access this share in the Win PE Rescue version, but it wouldn't be hard to move that drive and attach it to the computer if I needed to restore the OS. I have not had much experience restoring data files yet, but you can do it from within Windows, and no problem reaching the network there.

A couple of people have warned to stay away from Paragon. I didn't really see an explanation why. Without specific reference to the issues encountered, I can't relate to what the problem was. Paragon is a German company that AFIK has a decent reputation for reliability over some years. However, with the Paragon Backup 17 Rescue disk, I do get a message, "Cannot find server" when I try to access the network. Paragon tells me that the LAN adapter is "connected", but nevertheless from this standpoint, the Paragon Rescue disk is a bust. Not so with the Windows version, which allows flexible backup to my NAS, great automatic scheduling features so you can set it and forget it, and the ability to restore data files easily from Windows.

Macrium Win PE flash drive gives me a Network option, but says I need to provide LAN drivers. When I try to do so, I get the message, "The selected INF file did not find any drivers suitable for the device." Actually, one of the most frustrating parts of this has been identifying which drivers to use. Most drivers come in .exe install packages with many driver choices, so you have to locate the ones your machine is actually using for your LAN adapter. I finally found a good description of how to find the right drivers on the Paragon web site, in "How To Add Drivers To Recovery Media"

Unfortunately, this still did not work for me for either Paragon or Macrium. So I did not find a suitable way to get access to the Network or the USB share drive with the Rescue media for either software. EXCEPT with Macrium, in the PE version, if I ask to EXPLORE an image previously saved in Windows, Macrium takes me right to it, displays the content of the image file, and allows me to copy files from it. Why then, does the Macrium PE disk/flash drive not show me the whole network, which it must have access to, or allow me to restore the whole backup?

Enter AOMEI Backupper Standard: --I happened to have an old installation of it on one machine, and then upgraded to the newest version on all machines. AOMEI Win PE quickly found my Network and made it easy for me to access my NAS without a lot of issues finding and credentialing network resources, on all our computers. AOMEI for Windows and for Win PE both have an option to add Network Places to a list, and then access them as locations to save backups. It was easy to find the NAS just with the Share name, or the IP address. I was also able to access the USB share quickly in the Windows version, for backup or restore. There were no credentialing problems, it went amazingly smooth and easy. This seems a much better option to solve my problem of being able to restore from the network by loading the Win PE version (of AOMEI). However, I still have not figured out how to access the USB share on the router from the Win PE drive, though Bree had some good suggestions what might be the problem. This is not as huge a problem, since it is possible to move that drive to plug into a computer. Not so with the NAS.

Overall, I was surprised with how easy it was to use AOMEI. I like the flexibility of Paragon for data backups. I am now thinking of using both, in alternate sequencing, for disk or partition backup. I am inclined to use Paragon for data/file backup; I might use AOMEI as an alternative as well for data, in case of a bad backup. For full disk backups, I can use both, by saving AOMEI to the NAS and trying to restore from there, or Paragon to the USB share, to be moved to the computer if OS Restore is needed. Though many here like Macrium, I found the Free version the least flexible or capable compared to the other two, particularly where the network is involved.

If anyone has further insight on using a NAS or USB share to backup files or the OS drive, I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Well, I guess there is a downside to writing a long post, as I don't see responses. I hope I did not overwhelm anyone with too much of a post. I also hope this will be helpful at some point to someone who is trying to sort out which software to use. I am sure Macrium is a good program, but I found it very awkward when I am saving most of my backups over the network. This may be different if you are always using an attached drive or another disk installed on your computer.

Last time I built the WinRE, because I dual boot with Insider, MR actually picked up the RE from 18305! I was booted to 1809. Not sure if that's good or bad! I asked MR why, and nobody cared to answer.

Insider is now 18323, so it asks me again. I left it alone.

    That's one possibility

That's another one. I certainly do use a local HDD. However, as I found in responding to your queries, I would have no problem using Macrium rescue media to restore an image from a network drive.

The WinPE that Macrium uses comes with drivers for most common network cards built in. I can only think that yours must be an uncommon network card...

I don't think the LAN card is that uncommon. I tried with two Toshiba laptops, that both have Intel LAN. I think more likely it is the other issues you raised--how I have my security set. I had a hard time getting Macrium (and also Paragon) to accept my credentials. I have no idea why.

Most likely a setting you overlooked. Until Win10 I used Ghost for imaging. Never a glitch, and I did a lot of restores.
But Ghost didn't support UEFI, so I tested Aomei , Paragon and a few other usual suspects. For their speed.
Macrium was by far the fastest for my non-networked, 20GB needs. Just as with Ghost, I haven't looked back.

Yes, I think AOMEI is pretty slow, but since backups are to the network (slow anyway), and mostly happen automatically, I don't think the speed is a big issue for me.

The one thing I don't have a good handle on is whether any of these programs will have a poorer record on Restores. One way I expect to sooth that concern is to use two different programs for backups.
