    Macrium reflect compression

    hi guys,

To what percentage, roughly speaking, does Macrium Reflect compress system image? I have a laptop with only one HDD. This disk contains both Windows 10 1803 and data. When I create a full image of the disk, there seem to be no reduction in size. Before and after being both around 200 GB. I smell something is wrong here.

    Hi,
    1. There are two forms of image
    a. Forensic (uncompressed, used + unused)
    b. Normal (can set degree of compression).

    2. Some file types are already compressed- e.g. some video, audio, photos. If these comprise a significant %ge of the used part of the partition or disk being imaged, image compression will be much reduced.

Therefore the answer is 'it depends'.

The base image (normal) will be relatively large, but smaller than the used part of what is being imaged.
A differential image will be smaller than that, perhaps very much smaller if little has changed since the base image was created.

If still puzzled, please post a screenshot of how you configured Macrium R, and anything else that may help.

As Dalchina says, 'it depends'. As a guide, this is the compression I achieved with High compression for a Full image I made recently. There wasn't much user data so this basically represents the typical compression for the Windows system files and installed software. The image was about half the size of the files being imaged.

    Code:

    Backup Definition File: C:\Users\Owner\Documents\Reflect\Local Backup.xml
     Auto Verify: Y
     Maximum File Size: Automatic
     Compression: High
     Password: N
     Intelligent Copy: Y
     Power Saving: N
     Email On Success: N
     Email On Failure: N
     Total Selected: 64.13 GB
and this is the size of the image file it created:
    Code:
    Size: 35.0 GB (37,592,739,131 bytes)
Size on disk: 35.0 GB (37,592,739,840 bytes)
