System restore error - can't open SR never mind use it?

System restore error - can't open SR never mind use it?-image.png

Hi, so I'm seriously struggling with the above error on Windows 10 64. All bang up to date.

It's what I get when I access the system protection tab in system.

And before you ask, I've enabled the system volume and microsoft volume shadow services - no dice.

I've been getting some windows lock ups - and I am wondering if whatever is behind this error is behind those.

I've also tried the 'not configured' thing in groups configuration properties etc.

Nothing seems to make any difference. I did the DISM health check and sfc /scannow etc. Not a thing.

    Any advice here?

Hi, before taking a more radical step such as an in-place upgrade repair install which keeps all programs and data and most settings could you please advise your current build?

    (Windows key + R, winver)

Do you use disk imaging routinely as we constantly urge users to do, so they can recover to a previous working state quite quickly and painlessly without technical help? (E.g. Macrium Reflect (free) + external storage for disk image sets).

    Try no. 3 too:
System Restore Error 0x81000203 (Below solution at end of this mesage did not work)

I was having similar issues and what ultimately resolved it is explained below.

STEP 1: I had to go to Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services.

STEP 2: Then I had to enable the following three services and set them to Automatic start. These three services were disabled and this was causing error in restore point dialog.

    1. Volume Shadow Copy
    2. Microsoft Software Shadow Copy Provider
    3. Microsoft Storage Spaces SMP

After enabling these services, everything worked perfectly in restore point dialog.

    Thanks
    Sunil

Have you used any 3rd party programs and are they still installed such as this? tune-up programs, registry cleanerrs and the like?

I solved the issue and you may wanna use this as a suggestion for others. I realized after posting this thread that I use Tuneup Utilities (pc system optimizer like Advanced System Care, Iolo System Mechanic, etc.) and that I had switched it to turbo mode. This turbo mode had apparently disabled some windows features/functions in order to improve its speed and performance. All I had to do to remedy this problem is to switch Tuneup Utilities from running in turbo mode to just standard mode and TADA! Problem solved. Anyone out there having this same System Restore encountered an error. Please try to run System Restore again. (0x81000203) error message, there may be hope! If you're using a tuneup program, check to see that it's not running in turbo mode. If it is... that may be the problem

Thank you very much for this informative reply.

    Build 17134.112

Tried the suggestions. Got this from the elevated command prompt:

System restore error - can't open SR never mind use it?-image.png

    Messy to say the least.

Something may well be broken here. I do have an antivirus with a turbo mode - Emsisoft antimalware, but the turbo mode is off. And mostly has been?

Any further methods because I may have exhausted everything at this point.

It was. Thank you. I hoped it wouldn't have to come to this.

But que sera. Thanks again for your help.

PS: I take it there's no way to repair install windows while not losing all your installed apps? Like you could with Windows 7?

Yes, sorry, I didn't phrase it right. The links you gave me advised of refresh and restore etc, but refresh loses your apps.

So I wasn't absolutely sure exactly which procedure is the one I want for my needs.

And, quite honestly, still ain't? Which link do I want for the exact 'in-place upgrade repair install'?

    Thank you.

Yes, I tried this too. Couldn't see the KB update in my list said to be guilty of this problem. Not that it matters, it would just force install it again anyway?
