    Help with Elements

    Hi Dick,

Monday is still there and I think the back up is finished although I have a steady light shining on the unit. I have attached a couple of shots for you.

Dull, miserable and chilly over this side of the pond.

    Cheers,
    Ron

If the backup is finished, it will say so. There will be a completion message in a message box in the middle of the screen.

    Looks like this:

Oh dear! I think I may have closed it all down too early. I will start again and this time leave it alone.

When I saw all the info on the screen and just a steady light plus I was told it was safe to remove the unit I naturally assumed (quite incorrectly!) the job was done. Do you think I should repeat the exercise and this time wait until I get the blue box screen?

    Slightly confused here.....

Macrium itself has no message anywhere stating "safe to remove the unit". That is a message from Windows after you have clicked on the Eject Icon on the Taskbar. Please explain how you got that. It's not a normal part of a backup. When the backup is complete, you get a completion message. Macrium does not tell you to eject anything.

I saw the screen as shown so thought the job was finished. I then went to the bottom of my screen as shown and unplugged the unit.

Based on that screenshot, and nothing else, you never did a right-click, run. You simply have the definition display on the screen. That's all. Nothing is running.

The "^" in your taskbar is to show any hidden icons for the taskbar. Apparently, you clicked the "^", then eject, pulled the drive, and stopped. If that is, in fact, what you did, it let you eject the drive because it was not in use. Not in use because you were not actually running a backup. In essence, based on what you've posted and said, you have done nothing. No backup. If you had been running a backup, the Eject Request would have been denied because the drive would have been in use.

Ron, I don't think you right-clicked the definition, then RUN, then FULL.

That's all I can tell by what you've posted. Suggest you give it another go......

@RonBin79 I have been following this thread with much interest since I use Macrium Reflect and Dick's explanations are excellent.

I do mine manually as part of my monthly maintenance plan.
Since Win10 monthly WU's begin on the 2nd Tue of the month, I do my MR backups before that date and mark it on my calendar.
--- I schedule mine on a date convenient to my schedule from the Wed prior to the 2nd Tue of the month up to the 2nd Mon of the month.
--- The idea is to ensure the prior month WU's are ok and be ready for the upcoming WU's of the current month.
Naturally you can develop a plan that suits you.
--- I have met a lot of resistance from the people I help when it comes to creating system image backups.
--- With the interest you are showing, it will become 2nd nature to you pretty quickly as it has for me.

Question: Can a "Bootable Rescue Media" be made on the same stick as the Image Files are stored on? Or should these be separate?

Can be, but not recommended, due to "lose one, lose all" failure. Should be separate. This has been discussed at length in

    Help with WD Elements

OK, Have started another Back Up after having click "Definition" 'Monday' 'Run' then 'Full'. It has started as shown. I will get back to you once it has finished. Hopefully I will get the blue square at the end of it.

Going to cut the lawns while it is doing it's thing. The grass is getting a bit too tall.

    Cheers,

    Ron
