Restoring point will it work for Programs.

I need to set up a laptop to recover installed programs I have put on a laptop and subsequently uninstalled by my son, the same goes for settings.
I cannot stop my handicapped son age 35 exploring His ACER laptop, until I am presented with it not working, then I have to find out what has gone wrong and why.

It would be useful to deny Windows Updates and other Pop Ups seeking instructions,
Until I needed to install them. He uses "You tube" and "Google" and makes lists.

Currently there is no Administrator. This will have to be me.

I need to be directed, to Ten Forums previous help - I would really like to be able to sign in as administrator and simply restore any problem to the previous restored position.

Probably the simplest way would be to take an image with an imaging program. Most here recommend Macrium Reflect. When the laptop is set up the way you want it, take an image and store it on an external hard drive. If your Son messes up the laptop you can restore the image to the exact way it was when the image was taken. This may help Backup and Restore with Macrium Reflect | Windows 10 Tutorials

A Restore point will only affect programs installed after the Restore point was made, much like an image. However, restore points are very unreliable. Sometimes they work is the best that can be said for them.

There is a paid version and a free version of Macrium. I would suspect the free version would suit your purposes.

    Thank You essanbe,
I have copied the considerable notes about Macrium, as you suggest the free version seems sufficient for my son's laptop. The only problem I can see myself needing the tenforums help with may be in the setting up of the target data storage Flash drive etc, but that is a problem for a later date.

"...target data storage Flash drive..." BillZ. If you're wanting to store a backup image on a flash drive, please use two, twin, flash drives, each containing the same backup image; in other words, every time you make a new backup onto flash drive A, you make the same backup onto flash drive B. I certainly use twins! I've had one of the two twins suddenly force a format, thankfully, the 2nd one came through for restore purposes.

    Thank You Rolandjs,
I will do as you suggest, To be honest I have read that Solid Drives can be not 100% and this was my reason for choosing a HDD with the ACER Laptop, but the HDD also failed within 3 months.

"...the HDD also failed within 3 months..." Because one cannot predict whether an HDD or bybrid or an SSD will last thirteen years, three years, three months, three weeks -- that is why I have dual backups of both laptops' OS and data partitions.

Yes, there is. The user account that was set up when Windows was installed, just for example, is set up as an Admin account.
You may also have created others. Look for the Admin accounts in
    - Settings, Accounts, Your info
    - Settings, Accounts, Family & other people
    - Settings, Accounts, Access work or school

By the sound of it, your son's user account is an Admin one. Once you have tested your own Admin account, you can change his account to a Standard one to stop him uninstalling applications.

System images can get the system back up & running but controlling Admin accounts can stop the problems occurring tin the first place.
