System Restore did not complete successfully...

Getting the following error message when trying to do System Restore on a clean install of Windows 10 with the Creator's Update (Version 1803)...

After running System Restore the system displays the following message at the desktop after logging in:

System Restore could not access a file. This is probably because an Antivirus program is running on your computer.

I also get the Event Log Error 8210 with code 0x80070005 in Event Viewer.

The only Antivirus running is the included Windows Defender with Windows 10. No other AVs are installed.

Does anyone know what is causing this error? This is a totally clean install of Windows 10 Creator's Update.

Unfortunately this is an all too common error- there are many comments on this forum about the unreliability of S Restore. Also this may be a particular problem with 1803 builds.

Please search this forum for the many threads on this error number (e.g. simply put 0x80070005 into the forum search box, press Return) and look for ones marked 'Solved')

These may give you an idea..

Keep a note of what you try, and if not solved, post back with what you've tried.

I got it working after running (In the following order):

    SFC /Scannow
CHKDSK (with a reboot to trigger CHKDSK since the drive couldn't be locked while logged-in).
    DISM /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth

However, after another reboot the same error has started recurring again.

I'll look into the linked threads.

    Further ideas here are welcome.

I think it's easier to simply run the restoration from the Advanced startup, it never fails:

For quite some time I always run them from there, because errors always appear when run it in the normal way.

I never needed the unreliable System Restore again after it failed trying to get rid of VS2017.

Does anyone know where Windows stores a log of actions taken by System Restore?

C:\Windows\Logs\System Restore contains a log file but all the entries appear as blank when opened with EventVwr.

That's even if you convert the format to the newer log-file type.
