Which build of Windows do you have? And which form of backup in particular?

Have you tried searching for Backup in Settings? That offers e.g. File History, Windows 7 Backup and Restore in 1709, at least. Note this last is not listed in removed features in 1803, but I don't have that build myself.

    It still appears in 1803.

Both 'File History' and 'Backup & Restore (Windows 7)' still exit in 1803.

I have had File History turned on and pointing to a network History folder for some time now. It continued to work uninterrupted after upgrading from 1709 to 1803.

'Backup & Restore (Windows 7)' offers two independent functions, a 'files backup' and a system image backup - neither of which are particularly well thought of in these parts.

The system image in particular is temperamental at best, often failing to find the image to restore when most needed. It has been a deprecated feature since the Fall Creators Update and may be removed in future versions.

The files backup is clunky and awkward to use, creating its backups in a series of .zip files that cannot be easily explored by anything other that Windows own 'backup & restore'.

Most here recommend Macrium Reflect (free) to make system images, with the added bonus that the images can be explored to retrieve individual files.

If Windows built-in backup/restore function is used, using Macrium Reflect as a backup of the backup adds some certainty to any future restore operations.

Why... does using Macrium Reflect as a backup of the backup add some certainty to any future restore operations? Curious as to your rationale.. and why do both? Do you mean make a Macrium image of your (comparatively unreliable) system image? Surely not..

(I was hoping to save myself some typing )

I guess the idea was two independent backups but if I was going to do that, I would certainly not use the windows 10 version. I would use Macrium Reflect and one of (in order of preference) Easus Todo, Aomei Backupper, Veeam Endpoint, Paragon Backup.

    I would never use Acronis.

However, as all regulars here know, Macrium Reflect is very reliable and most of us do not do two independent backups.

The more important thing with Macrium is to be confident it will restore ok. You can obviously use the verify function but if really needing a comfort factor, one good way is to create a vm, boot from a macrium rescue drive and restore image to vm.

I actually use PRO, and use viboot occasionally to check image opens as a vm. You cannot do this with Home of course. Even with PRO, it can be tricky if only one hard drive.

dalchina, my earlier suggestion of using MR as a backup of Windows built-in backup was an attempt to avoid "splashing cold water in OP's face" for his desire to use Windows built-in backup/restore utility. I figure OP will eventually drop the Windows b/r idea and simply go with MR or any other 3rd party backup/restore utility.
