Macrium lets you backup to disk specifying the unique volume ID instead of drive letter. This means it doesn't matter what if Windows assigns different letters - it will always use the correct disk.

Go to "Other Tasks" > "Edit Defaults" > "Advanced" > "Destination Drive Discovery"

HI Roland. It's my first time doing it, but so far as I can tell if you assign a persistent drive letter (step by step How to Geek 'How to Assign a Persistent Drive Letter to a USB Drive in Windows') using Disk Management it sticks regardless of which port it's plugged into.

    Hi, I believe you mean
How to Assign a Persistent Drive Letter to a USB Drive in Windows
    - which is what I mentioned in post #2. However, as I indicated, were you to assign the same letter to two different drives, and plug them in in turn, removing the first before the 2nd, the letter only remains assigned to the second.

In this particular case the drive letter doesn't remain fixed.

Thus @lx07's post above suggests a more permanent solution for Macrium in particular.
