Windows 10: Windows backup shortening username

    Windows backup shortening username

I am trying to set up Windows backup on a few machines.

Windows (10) is shortening my name when it makes the folder. I am using Microsoft online accounts, not local accounts.

For example, it makes the folder /backups/jerem instead of /backups/jeremy. My son has two letters missing from his name.

On a different machine, however it spells my daughter's name in full without leaving off any letters.

Has anybody experienced this? And is there a fix?

    Welcome to TenForums @oguruma

When you create a new user as a Microsoft Account Windows uses the first five character of the email name for the name of the user folder it creates.

If you make a local account then the user folder has the same name as the local account user, however long that is.

I suspect your daughter had a local account initially, switching it to a Microsoft account doesn't change the name of the user folder. When you set up your son's account you must have set it up initially as a Microsoft Account.

If you want full control over the name of your user folder, then you should always create a local account. You can then switch it to a Microsoft Account later if you wish.

There is no 'fix' needed as those are the actual names of the user folders being backed up. Look in File Explorer at the C:\Users folder and you will see what I mean.
