The other option to consider is the BIOS setting and the drive partitioning.
Prior to the boot problem the BIOS was Legacy and the drive MBR.
UEFI / GPT adds some security and speed.

a) Health (SMART)
b) Benchmark
c) Full error scan
2) Run administrative command prompt: chkdsk /x /r (when prompted type Y to lock the drive and reboot to run the test overnight)
