Images can even be used to transfer your OS and progs to a new PC..
Revo Uninstaller for instance, creates a restore point after each operation, may com handy one day if it worked of course.
I'm trying to keep up with you guys! I obviously spent too long on Windows 7 and am now waking up to the new world of Windows 10.
I installed Macrium Free on a spare pc today and have just done my first image. I must go through the videos and notes but I just have some basic questions at this stage:
- Do I need to image the System Reserved partition? The test pc is dual boot Win 7 / Win 10 but the actual pc will be Win 10 single boot.
- If I want to just do a basic backup like an image of Windows I guess in Macrium I should leave the template as none, remove all retention criteria and run the purge before backup (whatever that means...).
These are just basic questions at this stage.
I guess the rescue media can also be used to install the backup on my existing HDD after wiping or on a new one on the same pc.
When I last tried doing this using Windows 7 tools it was though all my fruits went to nothing and my backup disks were not even recognised. Macrium looks like a superior product.
I am not sure if I should just do a basic backup (full system image) of the C drive first and then once a month or so. I still need to get my head around the difference between incremental vs. differential backups.
Hi, you should image all partitions Windows creates on installation (usually 4 for EFI installation).
The frequency is up to you, but you should update your image before any major change. It's also helpful to kep a simple record of changes, so if you restore an image you can work through that list to redo changes - e.g. program installations, settings.
Macrium R free only provides differential imaging. Restoring an image at most requires the base image + the differential image of the date you want to restore- i.e. older differential image files can be deleted.
Note MR maintains your set of images anyway.
Windows 7 Backup and Restore has been available on Win 10, but as you say, found by a number to be unreliable. It has been deprecated and MS recommends using 3rd party programs.
Excellent question. I wish more users would take the approach.
I do monthly system image backups using Macrium Reflect at the end of each month just before the beginning of the following month. Go ahead and get started: there's plenty of good advice and recommendations in this forum. Before you know it, it'll become 2nd nature to you.
Regular weekly system backups and immediately before new build (after system and malware checks) and just after successful build update.
I am running many tests on the test pc before letting loose on the production ones.
Now with Macrium Reflect Free I am getting an error code of 'MFT corrupt, Error code = 6, run 'chkdsk C: /r' which isn't what I expected at this stage. Perhaps I will experiment with some other products unless Macrium users can tell me what this is all about.
@meridius
I think you will find your answer here. Appears you may have a cluster in use by a file is not marked as 'in use' by the file system bitmap. Best you do the chkdsk C: /r
This is from the Macrium Forum. Identical to your issue:
MFT corrupt - Error code = 6. Please run 'chkdsk /r'
I saw that post before and it didn't really help.
I have just installed Aomei Backupper Standard and have done a system backup and will see how that turns out.
At least I have a test pc to do this in and test different products as this is something I had been lacking for some time.
